Sorry, I was at the game Saturday night but paying so little attention to the crowd’s reactions that I had no idea that it was chanting, “These refs suck” during that game.
Folks, do you realize how it looks to the rest of the world when you’re losing by 30 points and you’re crying about the referees?

Seems that in addition to the team not being prepared for the playoffs – neither were the fans. Step your game up Portland!!
Agreed. You have one of the best fanbases in the league, no need to sully that reputation because of one bad game.
I agree as well. I was at the game and did not participate in the chanting, although at the time I found it a little amusing. But looking back it seems childish and embarrassing.
Yes, the Blazers sucked in Game 1, but so did the refs. The combination of the crowd’s excitement, multiple bad calls (and non-calls), and seeing our star player take a knee and/or elbow to the side of his head and he lay on the floor while Mr. Shrimptastic gets a call at the other end of the floor… Blazers fans were HOT and had every reason to be.
Every time the Blazers tried to get some momentum, the refs whistled it away. It certainly was the Blazers’ fault for letting it get to them. That doesn’t change the fact that there was no consistency in the calls all freakin night. Fans have every right to be upset over that and we certainly have a responsibilty to call them out on it (because if the players and coaches do it they get fined.) It doesn’t matter what team you root for… We all deserve better than that!
@david1978odx – Mr Shrimptastic ate the blazers up like a pop-tart. That’s probably a shrimp you wished you had more of.
You are the perfect example of Blazer Superfan. Finding fault with the refs when the blazers played like crap. Get over it. you sound like every other homer I had to listen to the day after the game.
@illa – Didn’t I just admit the Blazers played like crap? It just happened that the refs were crap that night as well.
Maybe you missed my point… It was the perfect storm to elicit that kind of response from the crowd at the RG. Not saying it was the best thing to do, but the fans were justified and reserve the right to voice their opinion.
I could find plenty of fault with how the Blazers played Saturday night, but that is not the topic. Go drink some more hater-ade, pal. See you a the RG tonight!
So….
The fans were chanting “These refs suck” so much that you didn’t even notice it…
And you feel like you need to call them out about it three days later, only after another columnist brings it up?
Sounds like a bit of a non-issue to me, Dwight.
P.S. – I’m not a big fan of Aaron Brooks right now… Not trying to take away from the fact that he is a heck of a player… It’s that he’s a good part of why Ernie Kent still has his job. Not too thrilled about that.
You’re right on this one Dwight. Portland fans are supposed to be considered among the most intelligent basketball fans around, but that display was embarrassing. It would have been different if it were a 2 point game and an official made a bad call that cost us a possession, but to be blaming the refs for a 27 pt ass whipping is retarded and short sighted. Hearing people bitch during the last couple of days about the officials is even worse. The officials were no factor AT ALL. The Rockets played as good as they possibly could have. When you combine that with how bad the Blazers were, that equals a blow out on your home floor.
Dwight, c’mon, it’s mob mentality an nobody can really do anything about it. You are as responsible as anyone else…how come you didn’t stop it? I mean, you were at the game and so you must have been one of those terrible Blazer fans as well.
In all honesty who freaking cares? When your team goes down by 30, there isn’t a whole lot to cheer for. It’s not like fans are going to start booing their own team (that would be much worse), and since the refs made some bad calls, it seems pretty obvious they would take the brunt of fans’ frustrations.
Drew — why would I want to stop it? I could care less… you’d be shocked at how little attention I pay to what fans scream. That’s not the point. The point was how it makes Portland look like a hick town to the rest of the country. I’m not there to be a cheerleader. I’ll leave that to a good portion of the rest of the Portland media.
– Dwight
it looks almost as bad as doing the wave on national television
I’ll repeat the same comment that I made on Canzano’s very same article.
Blaming the refs for that game is silly but if the question is what do the guys on media row think then who cares. None of those visiting reporters gives a whit about Portland in the first place. I would guess that you and Canzano care because those are your peers so you are a little more attuned to it. Understandable but doing anything or not doing something simply to please the media is wasted time.
If the fans behave well it should be for themselves and the team. That’s all.
“I’m not there to be a cheerleader. I’ll leave that to a good portion of the rest of the Portland media.”
You stay classy, Dwight!
Oh, I forgot something. The fans needed to express deep frustration. I’m much happier having them chew on the refs than boo or berate their team. Get your therapy where you can.
I agree with Ed. The wave makes us look like a hick town, chanting these refs suck at the end of a horribly officiated game shouldn’t be that big of a deal. Other cities do it all the time. Why does it only get blown out of proportion when we do it? Like you said Dwight “why would I want to stop it? I could care less.” Well if that’s the case then why did you write an article about it? If the refs sucked (like they did on Saturday, on BOTH sides of the floor) then they should get called out. How come it’s not okay to call out officials yet it’s okay to call out players? Isn’t that a double standard? Especially when the referee is not doing the best job possible. What’s the problem here? Because we are self policing? Who cares, like you said right Dwight?
the refs do suck. But its not why we got killed.
Today’s internet blog addicted “fans” are so different and classless than what the fans were during the early 90’s finals run’s…
I was at Saturdays game and will be at tonights and hope that the Timbers Army version of Blazers fans will have a bit more class…..
Yo -
I was at the game and in the section that was happening in. I told everyone to shut up three times and each time they were quiet. The last time someone told me to shut up. I proceeded to explain to him that the blazers lost the game not the refs and a number of people intrigued by my interaction nodded in agreement. Some of knew what was up and made it clear to the loser fans.
The refs deserve what they got, and worse, no matter the score. In fact, deciding that refs only merit criticism for one-sided reffing when the point differential is within a certain range *hypothetically* creates an even more perverse incentive for a dishonest official.
embarrasing.
lol, I spelled embarrassing wrong. THAT’S embarrassing.
I couldn’t care less if we look like a hick town to the rest of the world. I couldn’t care less what New York or LA thinks of us. In fact, I like the fact that most of the world doesn’t understand the northwest. I don’t wanna see Portland get any bigger. I wanna keep this paradise a secret from outsiders…
With that said, we can’t blame the refs for that game. Our inexperience showed and we got punked. We need to take it like men, and show up tonight and even the series. We need to show these Rockets they are gonna be in a dogfight all the way
They did suck. Two of them worked the Spurs-Mavs game (another blowout) last night, and they sucked again. The chant was bush league in the extreme, but I hope Stern was listening because it was accurate.
To follow Jack’s comments… Those refs were Mark Wunderlich and Tom Washington. Please make a note of it.
Bet the over with those two.
Like anyone other then Portland or Houston fans were watching at that point. And I could give a rats a** what people in Texas think about people in the Northwest.
