Yes, the Ducks SHOULD pass Boise State in the BCS standings
Not totally sure they will, but they should. Why? I mean, after all they were beaten by the Broncos on opening night of the season.
Well, several things in this ridiculous system work in Oregon’s favor. It’s a cliche that with the BCS you want to lose early, if you’re going to lose. Teams have done it for years. And for many years, teams finish ahead of other teams they’ve lost games to.
If I’m voting in a poll right now, I put the Ducks ahead of Boise State. Why? Because right now they’re the better team. That’s what you have to consider when you’re voting.
Look, I said this at the time: Boise State is extremely well coached. This team can get ready to play anyone in the country for one game. But take them out of that weak conference, put them in a real conference where they’d have to play a tough opponent every week and they’d lose two or three games every season.
And yes, by jumping Oregon ahead of Boise State, you’d also create inequities in some people’s eyes that might help, eventually, tear the corrupt system down.
Great performance by the Ducks last night. Great. Cannot imagine what they’re going through right now down at USC. That was just not a Trojan team, was it? Ducks made them look like a WAC team.

If Oregon wins out then they’ll eventually pass Boise state in the polls. That said, at this point their goal is to play in the National Championship. And really they need Texas, Cinci and Iowa to lose a game to even have a shot.
Check your memory… Boise BEAT-BEAT-BEAT Oregon. Maybe some coffee would help you.
Hey Perspective Guy, Check YOUR memory you beat a team that hadn’t come together yet….by 11 points! Everyone outside the city limits of Boise knows if the two teams played today Oregon would win by four touchdowns. BSU’s a solid enough team, but no one from the Pac-10 gets up for you guys because you’re a lower tier program who plays against high school programs once your one shot at a BCS school has played itself out. If you played us again at the beginning of next season, you’d possibly squeak out a win there too. If you played a middle of the conference Pac-10 team say in the middle of the season you’d likely lose and lose big. Bottom line? BSU only has to get up for one game a year and their opponent is usually trying to shake off some preseason rust. Meanwhile, BSU’s entire season rests on that game. Now do you understand? Or do you need more of it spelled out for you. BSU needs to be in a conference that can compete at its level, but the problem there is, you’d suddenly be a lower to mid conference team. Why have that when you can run the score up on the Wyoming Middle Schools of the world. You’re just not a BCS program end of story.
And furthermore, if we continue with the “logic” of BSu fans,(what more do we have to do to prove ourselves?) Oregon has beaten a number 6 Cal (a little overrated, but now again ranked), 17 (i think) Utah (broke the winning streak), a number 5 USC (sure they are overated too right?!!), and also WA , NOW, all the suddenly it seems like Boise fans are sounding all jealous and ridiculous, Fact, your conference is WAC! Your field is Blue! And your opponents are pathetic (no disrespect intended to Hawaii etc…or Fresno) CONgratulations on “walloping” SJSU Who? A 1,5 team, lol, perspective huh? get a life buddy, you may be overdosing on spuds. Also, the two toughest conferences in the country are the pac ten and the SEC, neither of which BSu plays in.
I can’t remember…who won the Oregon Boise State Game last year?
First of all it was Boise State’s first game of the season also, and not only did Boise State beat Oregon on their own field, but when Oregon ran their mouths and how they were going to pay Boise back all they did was lay a fat egg. Say what you want but not having a first down for three quarters warrants a little respect. Would Boise State win the Pac-10 no, but does Boise State have the money or recruiting power that Oregon does No! Let Boise play in the Pac-10 for 4 years and see what happens. Make all the excuses you want Oregon fans but fact remains Boise State beat you not once but twice and once on your own field, Oregon fans should be embarrassed and get ready for the whooping Ohio State is about to hand them in the Rose Bowl, oh and like good Oregon fans I am sure your coming up with good excuses for why they are going to lose that game already.
Perspective Guy – here’s some perspective:
It is fair to say that we cannot blame Boise State for belonging to a relatively weak conference. There’s a history to that, and the politics of conference scheduling hamstring them to it. HOWEVER, it’s what Boise State — which has for some years now been trying to bill itself as a top BCS-caliber program — has chosen to do with its non-conference schedule that irks those who think BS does not deserve its touted ranking. Any lower program can win one game against a big team, especially very early in the season — is there an example of this happening later in the season (think not). Boise State doesn’t seem to make an effort to play with enough big boys out of conference at big times of the season, unlike a number of other big-time teams. The fact that they don’t seem to try harder to do this — even on a one-time basis (as I know some big teams they’ve approached have not agreed to a home-and-home arrangement) almost suggests they realize what would happen if they tried to step it up. If they continue not to do this, then the best reputation they can hope for is MVP for playing the flawed BCS system, a bit like beating big teams in bowl games not head-on, but on trick plays — “slow clap”
Now that the Ducks are doing well again it is perfectly acceptable for them to return that thug they have to active status. After all, they are winners, right? Pay attention to this lesson boys and girls.
Yes, pay attention boys & girls. Do something that you shouldn’t, and you’ll be punished.
A 7 game suspension his senior year seems like pretty serious punishment, except to a few sanctimonious simpletons.
Yes, my comment was a bit sanctimonious. Would you feel the same way if a player from another team sucker-punched a Duck? I’m personally embarrassed that this guy is still on our team. And yes, assault and battery is serious. Some people even go to jail for it. BTW, I like the alliteration of “Sanctimonious Simpleton”. How long did you flip through the thesaurus before you came up with that one? Brilliant!
In addition to my comment below:
Enough with the “sucker punch” label too! It’s not like Blount sought out Hout and decked him out of nowhere. In fact, it was the other way around, with Hout seeking out Blount to shove him and talk trash.
That, and Blount’s punch was in the mail the instant before Hout turned away. Hout exercised extremely bad judgment in choosing not to defend himself after taking such provocative actions.
I love how Hout is like an innocent bystander to these BSu fans, it’s hilarious. Sorry Blousy state, you thought you got what you wanted, but guess again, Blount is not a thug (you damn racist) and he will play again this year. Sorry bout that.
I think that the worst part of Hout’s lack of judgment was to seek out a frustrated 250lb. athlete and talk trash with his helmet off. Umm, can you say duh? What did he expect?
Please don’t think I’m calling you a racist, but I have a real problem with people who toss around the word “thug” to describe LaGarrette Blount.
Blount is not a criminal. He’s not a gang member. He’s just a young man who made a bad decision. And, as much as this truth stings, you wouldn’t be calling him a thug if he were white.
A young African American who gets in a fight is not a thug.
Please, for the love of all that is holy, drop the thug references.
Thanks.
Thank you for refraining from calling me a racist like Dave did. Based on Blount’s actions, not his race, I don’t think he should be on the team. I would definitely call a “white” player who acted the same way Blount acted a “thug”. But since he African American, and I since others have interpret that word as containing racial overtones (which I did not intend), I retract and apologize for my use of that word.
For the record, my wife and kids are not Caucasian and I do pro bono (free) legal work for African American (and other) clients. I have never been called a racist by anyone before Dave’s comment.
One more point. From a legal and moral standpoint, the fact that one person taunts another one is NOT an excuse to clock them. It is a criminal act. If Blount tries the same thing outside of a game the local district attorney and judge will so inform him.
THE FACT THAT IF UR GONNA BE MAN ENOUGH TO TAUNT SOMEONE, U’D BETTER BE MAN ENOUGH TO BACK IT UP! IM SICK AND TIRED OF ALL THESE STUPID LAWS TRYING TO DICTATE WHATS OK FOR US TO DO OR NOT TO DO. ITS CALLED INSTINCT…BEING A MAN…STANDING UP FOR URSELF AND WHAT YOU BELIEVE IN. HAVING A BACKBONE. I THINK FOOTBALL SHOULD INHERIT SOME OF HOCKEYS RULES ON FIGHTING!
They should be a top 5….Herbstreit echoed what Dwight is arguing here…Oregon has played as good or better than anyone in the top 10 and should now be considered in the top 5
id say their goal is to beat stanford this weekend
I agree. Road games are always tough and need to be earned. Can’t overlook Stanford OR Arizona.
true or false: last week, usc was ranked ahead of washington ??? (even though wa beat usc at wa)
rankings are about who is good RIGHT NOW
oregon should be ranked no less than 4th
last night, they would have beaten fla, ala, tex, boise st, cinci, tcu, iowa
“oregon should be ranked no less than 4th”
No less? So you are thinking they could even be ranked higher? That’s insane. No other team in the top five would lay that egg at Boise State like Oregon did. No one. That makes them a worse team overall.
Rankings are based on historical data as well. It is insane to assume that Florida is the best team right now. They’re the best team this SEASON. That’s why they’re number one. Luckily the voters understand this better than this post and comments suggest.
Are you KIDDING me! You obviously have not watched Florida this year. If not for some fixed officiating they would have 2 losses right now!
I would just like to point out that rankings are a meant to project what would happen in the future, not an award for past performance. Past performance obviously affects a voter’s opinion of what a team is likely to do on a given day. In Oregon’s case, the reason they would jump Boise is that voters understand Oregon has improved dramatically over the season, and in their opinion is playing at a level superior to that of Boise. Think of it like a stock price – the price you pay today is theoretically the sum of all the future dividends paid.
They are a complete team that beat a team with superior talent. While I am
a Duck , they may not be able to take the top 3 , so yea I put them at 4. Rose Bowl vs. Iowa here we come. [oh and Coach Kelly
take out your QB with a big lead and stop letting a bitter Taylor Mayes take shots at him]
Dwight- you and all the other Oregon fans know that Boise State would love to play football in the PAC-10 Conference but the Pac-10 won’t even consider expansion to include them or anybody else.
It isn’t how good you are right now, because that crap is nearly impossible to evaluate. You take the entire body of work- and right now that Bronco body of work is tremendously strong, yes stronger even than Oregon.
If you don’t agree, go watch the tape of that game… Yes Oregon has grown since then and they are playing their best football. But until Boise stumbles, it is their spot to lose…
You wanna play in the PAC Ten? OK, bring it!!
I’m curious. Why is Oregon considered the ONLY case where a head to head loss is the only thing that matters in ranking?
No one wonders why USC is ranked over Washington.
No one wonders why Ohio State is ranked over USC or Purdue.
No one wonders why Oklahoma is ranked over BYU.
No one wonders why Georgia Tech is ranked over Miami.
No one wonders why Pittsburg is ranked over NC State.
No one wonders why Houston is ranked over UTEP.
No one wonders why Miami is ranked over Virginia Tech or Clemson.
No one wonders why Arizona is ranked over Washington.
No one wonders why Notre Dame is ranked over Michigan.
No one wonders why Virginia Tech is ranked over North Carolina
No one wonders why BYU is ranked over Florida State.
But, I hear you saying, BSU is undefeated! Unfortunately, except for Oregon, BSU is undefeated against vastly inferior competition. In order to retain an “elite” status to their resume, BSU must do more than just beat inferior teams. Frankly, it must crush them. A 7 point win over Tulsa simply won’t do.
Should BSU win out they will have no losses versus top 25 competition, but only one win. Should Oregon win out they will have one loss to top 25 competition, and potentially as many as five wins (Utah, Cal, USC, Arizona, and Oregon State). At least two of those wins would be dominating.
In all cases I mention above the more highly ranked teams resume eventually overcame it’s loss to a lesser ranked opponent. So it should be between BSU and the Ducks. Unless BSU is dominating in it’s remaining games, it should be vulnerable to a leapfrog should the Ducks win out. I’m not saying BSU isn’t good or must be leapfrogged, but I am saying you can make an excellent case that it should be.
the ducks got screwed again in the most recent rankings. #8! this team should be a top 5 team this week. guess not as many people watched the total domination as we think…at least not the important ones!
oh and by the way ya’ll should check out the article in the SMELL A times this morning! verrrrrrrrry interesting.
BS U should count itself lucky, Oregon is doing all the work in keeping BS U afloat in the BCS polls. Schedule more than one decent team if you think you should be ranked higher and quit whining on blogs.
Boise State was a better team on Sept 3rd. But as of right now, Nov. 1st, Oregon is not only better than Boise State, they are the best team in the country. If Oregon wins out, any system that doesn’t give them a shot at the national title is fundamentally and irredeemably broken and flawed.
I HATE BOISE STATE!! I HATE MIKE STOOPS!! I HATE THE ARIZONA WILDCATS!!
Arizona’s given Oregon problems, not only with losses, but remember the Kellon Clemens bull? I hate Boise State, because of what they’ve done to the Beavers and Ducks. I hate how they get this “media darling” stroking and all of this bull.
Now, if Oregon can win out, here’s what I can see happening: Florida slips, then Texas and Alabama play in the BCS Title Game, and Oregon beats Iowa in the Rose Bowl. Texas/Alabama and Oregon get a split national championship. Colin Cowherd thinks that Chip Kelly is the “peddle to the metal” coach Oregon’s always needed. I really really hope he’s right.
