An Oregon sports fan’s dream. All that has to happen is for the Ducks to do their job next week at Arizona. And of course, the Beavers to take care of business in the virtual bye week game at Washington State.
Then, it would set up the dream match. If the Beavers were to win, it would mean a three-way tie with the Ducks and probably Stanford — and since Oregon State would have beaten both of them, on it goes to the Rose Bowl.
The Ducks, as we know, go if they win out.

Time is ripe for that late season meltdown the Ducks always seem to stumble into. Let’s to see what you’re made of Oregon! Time to see if the Chipster can instill an ironlike will to win in a hostile road environment. If Oregon beats Arizona down there, the Beavers will be mere cannon fodder in the Civil War. Go Ducks!
Just like the Beavs “meltdown” when the PAC-10 and roses were on the line in last year’s Civil War? 65-38, and broken roses everywhere
How about this scenario?
a) Stanford loses to Cal (doesn’t matter how they do against Notre Dame-Charlie the Hutt is probably toast in either case)
b) CAL wins out (beating Stanford and UW)
c) USC wins out (beating Arizona and UCLA)
d) Arizona loses to USC, but beats Oregon and ASU
e) Oregon loses to Arizona and OSU
f) OSU wins the civil war but gets upset by Washington State?
What would this give you? A six-way tie for the Pac-10 title.
Who would go to the Rose Bowl then? I nominate Boise State. (Though under the Pac-10 Bylaws, USC has the tiebreaker in this situation, by virtue of the “proximity to the Rose Bowl” clause…)
You are giving me a headache. What if just see what happens?
The only way USC goes to the Rose Bowl is if they buy their tickets early enough.
Well, in that 6 way tie, you would first compare their records against eachother. All teams would be 3 loss with the exception of USC, who is 2 loss to the other 5, with 1 coming from washington. Hence, USC gets the rose bowl.
Hypothetically, if USC had lost to OSU instead of WA, and there was a 6 way tie, it would be an actual full tie. The 2nd place record check through last place record check would match across the board, thus the Rose Bowl would go to Cal, as they have gone the longest without an appearance. Yes, Arizona has never been, however among Pac-10 teams, both OSU and Cal havn’t been since before AZ was in the conference, and thus would get it.
The weird thing is except for The Beavers losing to WSU everything else in your scenario is plausible:-)
This is really cool. I’m not an alum nor a native of Oregon. But it’s cool to see this come down to potentially a single game with two schools whom I feel have pretty rabid fans.
I’m with you completely. I’m a Husky alum and season ticket holder, BUT I’m genuinely happy to see the Ducks and Beavers with a great shot to go to the Rose Bowl. And, I think that both teams have a great shot at beating Ohio State!
someone please send this memo to canzano – the one who thinks the ducks wont even get a bowl game
also: major turnaround for the Oregon D-line – those guys were attacking the line instead of getting tied up by O-linemen
from jan to july, lock the D-linemen in the weight room and feed them steak and potatoes
Oregon has a defense ???
John Canzano is a true BHB.
First I am OSC grad, so guess where I stand?
Good to see the Civil War means something again. In the 28 year drought it only meant who won game. Since Riley showed up it has often meant post season implications.
I hate to admit there were maybe 2 or 3 Civil Wars when I sort of hoped Ducks would win, cause they might get a bowl. I have had no problem with that since Riley arrived. Well there was Erickson for awhile, too.
wow-o-wow-o-wowie! who’da thunk this?!?!?!?
GO DUCKS! QUACK DAMNIT!
ohio state is gonna have their hands full if its oregon, stanford, or the beavers!
oh and if the ducks DO win out and win the rose bowl, where do they wind up in the final rankings? you would think top 5 wouldn’t you?
As we all know, I hate Arizona and I hate Mike Stoops. Go Ducks, take care of business down there! I don’t care if it’s a 1 point win. Just keep Stanford and Arizona out of the Rose Bowl! Let’s give schools in the State of Oregon a chance to taste the good stuff.
i hear ya brother!!! don’t californicate the rose bowl any more than it already is!!!
And, this is coming from a Husky season-ticket holder who has just watched both the UO and OSU trounce us by an average of 25 points! It’s hard not to be happy to see those two programs rise to prominence in the late 90s, and maintain it.
Can’t this monster Civil War showdown happen even if Arizona beats the Ducks, if Arizona loses to Arizona State? (Highly unlikely, I know.)
More interestingly, even if Arizona beats the Ducks (11/21) and Arizona State (11/28), won’t the Civil War winner (12/3) wind up going to the Rose Bowl if Arizona loses to USC a couple of days later (12/5)?
Arizona needs to win out to have any real shot of going to the Rose Bowl. If Arizona beats the Ducks, but loses to USC or ASU, then it opens the door to Stanford, who would go if OSU loses the Civil War (assuming they beat Cal).
even though i hate boise st and its fans and loverboy headband hout, and its fugly turf,
the northwest is now the hotbed of college football (minus the wa programs)
the sec sux and is overrated
I find it very gratifying to see both oregon schools at the top with the socal schools below and the washington schools in the abyss
This is a great era
