The X-Man

June 14th, 2009 by Dwight Jaynes | Filed under Coaches, NBA.

All those championships. All that work becoming the Zen Master. All that time building that mysterious image.

All of it — years in the making – undone in just a few seconds by putting on that yellow baseball cap with an “X” on the front.

Man. What did you just do to yourself?

When Phil Jackson wins a Championship without MJ, Pippen, Shaq or Kobe then he can wear all the silly hats he wants. He’s a solid coach, but a front runner for sure. Easily the most overrated coach in the last 20 years.

  2. lefty says:

X Guess I missed something. I turned that game off before end. mostly because i had no interest in watching Lakers celebrate or any interviews with Jackson

  3. hmmm says:

not sure, but maybe it’s a roman numeral 10? I didn’t watch any of the finals, so I don’t really care. I’m not a big Phil Jackson/Faker fan, so I refused to give the league my share of ratings. How many more days till the draft?

DWIGHT JAYNES IS A BITTER OLD MAN THAT IS MAD THAT HE DID NOT MAKE MORE OF HIMSELF. PEOPLE REMEMBER THIS IS THE SAME GUY THAT SAID THE BLAZERS SHOULD BUILD THERE TEAM AROUND 3 POINT SHOOTING!!!!!! AN EXACT RECIPE FOR DISASTER. DWIGHT YOUR A LOSER! A BIG TIME LOSER! AND YOU CAN ERASE THIS ALL YOU WANT ITS JUST GOING TO SHOW EVEN MORE HOW MUCH OF A LOSER YOU ARE. GET A LIFE

  5. Josh says:

    Dwight,
You’re called the Godfather of Portland media for a reason. The more people you piss off the better you are. Keep it up because without you some other idiot wouldn’t have anything to do. As for Phillip, what a smug a-hole and I can’t wait for next season so Nate can put him in his place.

  6. Bill McDonald says:

A few observations, besides the obvious one about Steve being an asshole.

    1. I told you the current Blazers should have taken Adam Morrison. He has a ring – they still don’t.

    2. I feel very happy for Bill Walton tonight.

    3. I’m sick of Stan Van Dummy and the Orlando Tragic. Let’s hope the refs step in and make sure we get a dream finals between Kobe and LeBron next year.

  7. sod says:

why do trolls exist? what point is there in it? I’m sorry for the idiocy Dwight. Feel free to delete my comment here when you delete theirs. Have a good one, keep up the good work.

  8. lefty says:

    several deletable comments here

  9. Sherman says:

Dwight, would you wear a tie or a shirt that may not match your personality because your children bought it or made it for you? I know I have, but maybe I wasn’t “hard” enough to tell my kids I hated that tie.

The point is that Phil Jackson said his children made the hat for him. I give him a pass for that, but I guess that’s just me.

  10. Bill McDonald says:

For the record I was trying to be funny, but I guess if you have to point that out, it’s already too late.
I am happy for Bill Walton, though. Luke getting a ring is all right by me. Remember – he’s named after Maurice Lucas.

  11. Greg says:

Sorry I missed that, I’m still stuck with the image of Muhammad Ali wearing a Detroit Red Wings jersey in my head.

  12. DC Oregonian says:

Ok, I don’t like Jackson any more than any other Blazer fan, but I’ll cut him some slack on this one. A) his kids had it made up for him, B) it really is exceptional to have won 10 rings as a coach, so give him the moment, and C) to all of those who say it doesn’t count until he wins one without Shaq, Kobe, MJ, or Pippin, how many championships did Red win without Russell? I really can’t stand the Zen Master, but you have to give the man his due. He’s been incredibly successful…

  13. mike says:

and that folks is why you don’t build a team around 3 point shooting!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  14. Dwight Jaynes says:

Well… yes, his “kids” had it made for him. Now I have no real idea but guys, it’s not as if Phil’s kids are two five-year-old girls who thought it would look cool on daddy. My goodness, his kids must be in their 30s by now, aren’t they? I think he could have had a good laugh, worn it at the family BBQ and gone on with his life. I’m sure they’d have understood if he’d not worn it five minutes after they won the title. And Phil doesn’t exactly strike me as a guy who is all sentimental about his family, anyway — certainly I don’t think his ex-wife would think so.

I hate to state the obvious here but if you dislike Dwight so much, why are you reading AND commenting on his blog?

I’m glad Phillip won, he earned number 10, I’m happy for Kobe so everyone can shut up about not winning won with Shaq. Yes, he’s really annoying but he’s also one of the greatest players ever. In addition, how come nobody every said MJ didn’t need to win without Pippen? How about Bird without McHale? Just asking.

Great blog Dwight. Thanks for keeping me informed.

  16. ZigTic says:

I thought it was a little tacky, and yes, it would have been more appropriate to reserve the hat for some family event. At the same time, however, I’m of a mind that if a person wins his 10th NBA championship as head coach, he can do whatever the hell he wants to. Even if he would have stripped off all his clothes and lapped naked around the court while singing We Are the Champions by Queen, I’d have been inclined to give him a pass, just this one night.

Plus, it would have been far more entertaining, and we could have spent the next few months speculating whether or not prolonged exposure to dangerously high levels of smugness has finally taken its toll, seeped into Phil’s brain, and caused permanent tissue damage.

Then again, maybe he did, and I just missed because, as always after a Lakers’ Championship, I spent the rest of the evening puking my guts out into the toilet.

  17. ZigTic says:

Oh, and by the way, Dwight, congratulations, it looks like you’ve found yourself an arch-nemesis in this “steve” fellow. It works out perfectly, too, as it’s always desirable to have an arch-nemesis with a ridiculously low IQ. That way, you can always easily thwart their dastardly schemes.

In the continuing battle of Intelligence vs The Caps-Lock, who shall arise the victor? I don’t know about you guys, but I am riveted!

  18. Panama says:

Putting on that X hat may have been the most self-serving thing I have ever seen in professional sports. How fitting that brand of narcissism happens on a team that premieres Kobe Bryant.

I think a big reason why I dislike the Lakers franchise is their lack of humility. Their holier than thou attitude really sours me

The man obviously can coach and will go down as one of the greats. However, his chronic manipulations of the media, referees, and even his own players is nauseating

I hope somebody else wins the title besides the lakers or celtics. I really dislike both of those teams
