The first thing you do if you’re the general manager is try to figure out if it’s the player’s heartfelt desire to go or if it comes after prodding by an agent.
I recall in the case of Drazen Petrovic, his request for a trade seemed to Blazer brass to be totally the result of an agent planting seeds of discontent.
Portland’s coaching staff loved Petro and knew he would someday be a real player. But at the time, there were not many minutes for him. But the agent eventually forced a deal that proved to be a bad one for the Blazers.
In the case of Sergio Rodriguez, I think it is understandable that he would want to be moved. It just isn’t going to happen for him here. He needs to play in an uptempo system (I think New York would be great for him).
But it is Kevin Pritchard’s task to not make a hasty move. His job is to placate Sergio as best he can until there’s a move out there that is beneficial to the Trail Blazers. And that may not be soon.
Sorry, Sergio. Until that time, you better play as hard as you can to make yourself as attractive as possible to other teams.
And you better be patient.
