University of Portland rated among nation’s Top 10 mid-majors

November 11th, 2009 by Dwight Jaynes | Filed under College basketball, University of Portland Pilots.

That’s what Fran Fraschilla says on ESPN:

Former Stanford assistant coach Eric Reveno has quietly built the next in the line of WCC teams trying to knock Gonzaga off its perch at the top of the league.

All five starters return from last season’s 19-13 club. The Pilots were one of the best 3-point shooting teams in college basketball, knocking down 42 percent of their shots, and are led by outstanding guards Nik Raivio, T.J. Campbell and Jared Stohl. Robin Smeulders leads an underrated front line for Reveno.

Doesn’t the portland lineup look like–
    Chicago 98 Portland 10
    Steve Kerr Steve Blake g
    Michael Jordan Andre Miller g
    Scottie Pippen Brandon Roy g/f
    Toni Kukoc LaMarcus Alrdidge PF
    Dennis Rodman Greg Oden C

    in structure?

If the young Ducks team can grow up this year and if the Beaver continue to improve under coach Rob there will be 4 decent to solid basketball programs in the state… that would be sweet.

    • ManOfVision says:

Absolutely. It would be fun to have some real March Madness energy in this area, and this is the first time I can remember when all four D-I schools in Oregon had at least an outside shot at the tournament in the same season.

  3. Matty says:

The Pilots will still bow to mighty Gonzaga.

Mark Few has a rebuilding year, and nothing is a given..but with Matty Bouldin, Meech Goodson and Steven Gray it should be enough for another Sweet 16 run.

  4. Tiparillo says:

Well I’ll take anyone over Gonzaga – well except St. Mary’s.

I am not too hopeful for my SCU Broncos. We got rid of well-liked Coach Davies for a young recruiter form UCLA in Coach Keating. He’s only 31-33, but the next two years are when “his guys” come to the forefront – so the jury is still out.

    • Matty says:

“Do you think Gonzaga rebuilds or reloads?”

      Jay Bilas (5:09 PM)

“Reloads. The big men are very good. Robert Sacre will be the next in a long line of All-WCC bigs from Gonzaga, and Elias Harris is a big time athlete. With Demetri Goodson, Matt Bouldin and Steven Gray, that is a terrific line-up. Perhaps not the great depth and experience of last year, but very, very good.”

I have been waiting for the day. Though I am OSU grad and always a Beav, UP would have been my school if I could have afforded it.

  6. CasualFan says:

Hey Dwight, thanks for showing UP some love by having them here on your blog. I graduated from a Pac-10 school, but our city D-I schools are often overshadowed by the Pac-10. It’s understandable that they’re not in as prestigious conferences as the Pac-10, but their student-athletes represent our area well and their coaches work hard, too.

  7. Steven says:

Greg Oden had 0 fouls last night. You said he had 1 foul.

  8. KRK says:

For those of you who get to watch the Portland Pilots play regularly, what do you expect from Luke Sikma? Can he shoot like his father did?

    • ManOfVision says:

Luke has become a bit of an enigma. He was impressive as a frosh, but has not shown as much since then. UP has others quality bigs, so of Luke can just rebound and make smart passes out of the post, he’ll do his job well.
