Trail Blazers tried hard to get David Lee

October 6th, 2009 by Dwight Jaynes | Filed under NBA, Trail Blazers.

That’s what Hall of Famer Pete Vecsey is writing in New York:

No firm offer was made that evening, says a Blazer source. However, it was felt a satisfactory compromise could be reached (Bartelstein wanted $50 million over five, Portland countered with $28 million over four with an escape clause after three) if Lee told them he was as serious about them as they were in him.

“I was given one night to think it over,” Lee said. “I couldn’t commit. I was worried about playing time. Aldridge is All-Star-caliber and they’ve got a huge investment in Oden.”

Interesting. Lee told Vecsey he was given only one day to make up his mind because the Blazers had Andre Miller waiting.

Surely the organization is aware that stockpiling all this talent will become a huge headache when trying to dole minutes. I think Miller is the better fit and Lee ’s analysis of playing time in Portland was right on.

What I would say about this is Peter Vecsey has a decades long track record of NEVER being right with his FA/trade rumor suppose to be inside information. Dwight surely you remember Vecsey and Drexler? Man, I remember weekly for seemingly forever Vecsey had Drexler for sure being traded here. For sure this time going there. It was endless. He was always wrong. Tho it is easy to imagine the Blazers reached out to see if there was a chance of reaching a deal with Lee. However what Vecsey has to say about anything as to any sort of insider information on the NBA quit being relevant some 20 odd years ago.

Barry — Pete quoted Lee directly. It all looks pretty straight to me.

Makes sense to me. Just because they went after Lee doesn’t mean they wouldn’t have still gotten Miller. Sign Lee, trade Travis to Memphis for space, then sign Miller. Same thing they were going to do if Milsap signed. Trade Travis and then sign Miller.

ya, either that or trade travis+ straight across for Miller in a sign and trade. Would have been an interesting dynamic having Lee off the bench, but clearly he wants to start.

  5. Horace Wilkins says:

READ THIS CAREFULLY: “They felt I’d fit in perfectly with LaMarcus and Aldridge,” Lee said. “Believe me, I was flattered. They’ve got a great team.”

If this is a “direct quote” then I’m glad we didn’t get Lee. He’s not very smart.

Although ima die-hard Knicks fan, I like the new look Blazers. Say what you want about Lee, but y’all woulda been better off with him. But hey, we happy to have him back in NYC.
