The latest on David Lee

January 5th, 2009 by Dwight Jaynes | Filed under NBA, Trail Blazers.

Here is what I’ve heard this afternoon:

  • The Knicks will NOT do a deal this far away from the trading deadline in February. Makes no sense not to wait until the very end to get the best possible deal.
  • New York is apparently looking for SERVICEABLE players with expiring contracts. Look, that’s a team with a chance at the playoffs and by accepting expiring contracts from players who are injured or not good enough to help it would be a big blow to their playoff chances and hurt their credibility with their fanbase.
  • Lee is a restricted free agent this summer. The Knicks have no intention of matching a max offer and don’t want to let him go with no compensation. Hence, look for a deal prior to the deadline.
  • There is some consternation around the league about Portland’s desire for Lee. If Oden and Aldridge get reasonable minutes on the floor as starters and with Przybilla as the backup center, how can anyone justify Lee making big money and not playing significant minutes? Could it mean that eventually Przybilla gets dealt? You would think it’s a possibility.
  • The Knicks have some interest in Outlaw and Rodriguez. But they’re going to drive a pretty hard bargain for Lee. Portland may not want to part with what it’s going to take, particularly for a player who may be getting limited minutes here.
  • Several people asked me this question: “Isn’t it time for Portland to finally do some sort of deal?”

Why would the Blazers deal Pryz ??? They would be lacking a real and productive center….. The Oden experiment is not going to end in the Blazers favor unfortunately.

  2. wapitime says:

Go get Lee, he is a gamer. He would be a great addition for our future run at a title. But do not give up Pryz in the deal—no way. Frye, Outlaw, Sergio, or Bayless, one or two of those guys might get the deal done. Just do it!

  3. Dennis stone says:

bob , once again you are the definition of a troll

  4. wapitime says:

If Oden can stay healthy he will eventually give everything we expected on draft day.

  5. RG says:

i would give Frye and Outlaw for Lee before I gave up on any of the point guards. Eventually Blake is gonna leave, but Sergio and Bayless aren’t ready to take over yet.

  6. Eric k says:

Outlaw and Sergio is steep, but tempting. Lee replaces Outlaw’s minutes and eventually I’d liek to see us make a big upgrade at PG with Blake as a solid BU so Sergio is expendable. I’d worry that giving up our 2 best chips doesn’t leave enough to get the PG, is Frye, LaFrentz expiring contract and another chip (Webster? Bayless?) going to be enough for a top notch PG?

  7. Robo Bob says:

    Error, Error, Error.

TRADE GREG ODEN HE IS A BUST. GREG ODEN IS SAM BOWIE. GREG ODEN IS ALWAYS HURT. PRZYBILLA IS THE STARTER. PRYZBILLA IS THIS GENERATION’S WILT CHAMBERLAIN.

ERROR ERROR THIS DOES NOT COMPUTE UNLESS HA IS BEING BROUGHT BACK. ERROR EVERYONE WITH LOGIC IS SAYING ODEN IS OK ERROR. ERRORRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR

  8. Ozzy says:

I am not a big fan of trading during the season, but I am concerned over our interior play. Outside of Roy our guards appear timid to penetrate to the hoop and outside of a still inexperienced Oden we really don’t have any inside game

Were gonna need that if we want to win championships. The question is when is the right time to go after it? Should we wait for possibly better deals or should we take a risk and go for it now?

Bob seriously your a broken record…time to get another hobby…

  9. Bob Whitsitt says:

Sorry Ozzy…. I am not one of the Sheeple who are drinking the Oden kool-ade.

A true superstar center of the likes of Shaq, David Robinson,Tim Duncan etc… did not gradually and slowly improve then stagnate. They made immediate impacts on their respective teams their rookie seasons, Oden has not and will not. He will probably will have a few decent years as a off the bench 2nd unit player.

I do find it laughable that those that participate at this great sports blog use the “troll” label, the entertaining, yet 8th gradish Robo Bobo, if someone does not bow down to the shrine/altar/dais of Oden………..

  10. Tom says:

Nobody thought Greg was going to be Shaq.

But Shaq, David, and Tim had more experience before entering the league. Shaq had two years of college ball, while the other two played a full four.

None of them had microfracture surgery before their rookie season, they were able to start their rookie seasons in tremendous shape and condition.

Greg may never be as good as the three you mentioned, but give him two or three years in the league, and he will be much better than a ‘2nd unit’ player.

    Now about that trade….

    Portland needs a PG.

  11. Bob Whitsitt says:

The Blazers do need a PG, whose available ???

  12. Ricky Bobby says:

Tom you are wasting your time and energy talking logic to Bob. Join the rest of us and just accept that he is a laker troll. Bob’s view is Bob’s view. He is entitled to his opinion no matter how invalid it is. It is humorous that he is fixated on how everyone else is wrong for disagreeing with him. It is even more humorous that he would rather win one or two more games this year than build a team that can win championships for the future. So Tom, don’t give in to that urge to help Bob understand, it won’t work. I wonder who Bob thinks will be better than Oden that is out there available. Joel does not avg enough minutes in his career to be a full-time starter….oh wait he probably likes Frye. That would be quite an upgrade get rid of Oden and play Frye. Am I right Bob?

  13. Bob Whitsitt says:

Ricky Bobby, step back from the Oden altar…. Try to use an original thought other than ” Laker troll” work on it please….

  14. C-Ho says:

Seriously Dwight, part of running a blog is keeping the dialog productive. Good blogs do it. Bad blogs don’t. Bob and all of his incarnations (Bob Whitsitt, Robo Bob, ect.) is a textbook troll, severely diminishing the quality of discourse. Using multiple handles is usually more than enough reason to revoke commenting privileges. Consider.

  15. blazin07 says:

This rumor for Lee doesn’t make any sense if KP doesn’t clear up the jam at PF/C and SF. And it wouldn’t make any sense to thin, the already thin, point position. Blake is a backup that is starting, Bayless is an UNDERSIZED SG that everybody thinks he is the savior at point because he took home the SL MVP. And Sergio…doesn’t have it? not enough PT? McClueless doghouse?? whatever reason it is….
With Oden, yeah it’s disappointiong to have this kind of production after all the hype and being a 1st pick. But its way too early to throw in the towel. I’m sure the other 29 teams would take him in a heartbeat. I’m waiting atleast 2 years after thisone to make my educated judgement on Oden.

  16. Ricky Bobby says:

    Bob,

you do nothing than to prove our points for us. I have never said Oden is Shaq. I am not on the far extreme that he is a bust. You see Bob, I take the common sense approach of taking all factors into an equation and not your chicken little the sky is falling. I have even said Joel is a great player. But Bob, really, if you know so much why are you not still in the NBA as a GM. Your name sake blew up the blazers with bad chemistry experiments. Ironic how you know want to blow up the blazers by making a bad move. Bob, how come you don’t hammer on Brandon, he has missed a lot of games in his career, he is hurt a lot, how come you don’t judge him by the same standard as Oden? Why are you not clamoring for Rudy to start? Brandon went number 7 in the draft I believe, projected even higher at one time. Why are you unable to at least say I will give Oden a year? Why will you not acknowledge points I and others have made about his improvement and his total for double doubles this year. He has more than LA.
Bob I guess while your Laker Troll Flames where humorous for awhile, I find them almost sad now. I am more than willing to discuss ideas but really I guess when you don’t even acknowledge small truths it is hard to take you serious, you don’t have to agree but Bob there is this thing called Common Ground that you can’t seem to find.
It is your opinion, it is a free country…..well for now anyway. Bob I wish you the best as well as Robo Bob (whom I think had mad his/her point and can stop now).

Bob work is not fun it is work. I don’t have to work on things that you make so easy.

  17. Ricky Bobby says:

I just saw on the SI website via Ny post that the Blazers are eyeing eddie Curry, is this true dwight? If it is all I can do is shake my head and wonder.

  18. Randy says:

The Vanilla Thrilla better not be traded. I’m all for adding another big in place of Frye or Ike, and I’m okay with letting go of Outlaw and Sergio…but we better get a legit PG and a rebounding thug PF in return.

  19. lebron james says:

what about trading for kirk hinrich??? wouldnt that be a good fit for the blazers? or gerald wallace?

  20. luanne53 says:

David Lee can have TO’s minutes and then some! Do it!!
Hustle player with midwestern values! What’s not to like?
    Go Blazers!

  21. GoZone says:

Bob Whitsitt and Robo Bob are really just one person that shouldn’t be taken seriously. Everyone seems to forget that Oden is coming back from the worst knee surgery an athlete can have. Look at Amare when he came back, and look at his athleticism now. Case closed.

  22. two4larue says:

In response to: Several people asked me this question: “Isn’t it time for Portland to finally do some sort of deal?”

Pritchard is fond of using the term “putting the cake in the oven and letting it bake” But what if the finished “result” is a 9th place finish in the Western Conference, is that the gourmet recipe we were expecting back in October?

At the 35 game point, KP should have enough of a “read” on his players, like who should go and who should stay. Some choices are obvious (Frye/Diogu = go) other will be more difficult (Outlaw/Sergio?)

The absense of Webster makes the decision harder, since the “logjam” at small forward has only been anticipated so far, not realized.

One thing is for certain, David Lee is not a small forward. He plays the same position as LaMarcus Aldridge. Their games would compliment each other very well, but there are not enough minutes to go around for the two of them (sound familiar?) and neither one is really a backup center, either.

The roster does need a better backup power forward, but not a young player who’s worthy of big minutes, like Lee. A veteran player would be better, someone with playoff experience and a “take no prisoners” attitude would be even better. I’ve suggested Chris Wilcox as a short term solution (he’s a UFA in June) but there may be a better option out there, on a team that is going nowhere.

  23. JAG says:

SO for all you ODen basher out there. I say give the guy some time. He is progressing nicely and will be a solid center in a league with very few. While he has not had theimpact of a SHaq (once in a generation), Duncan (a PF who also had David Robinson). Lets not forget he has essential played 4 months of competitive basketball in the last 2 years. Also, dont forget some big guys do take time to devleop. yao Ming 13pts/8rbs rookie year. Dwight Howard 12/10, Andrew Bynum 1/1 and all of those guys, save bynum went to teams without big time scorers so got a ton more touches. What the blazers need is a big time PG who can be a lock down perimeter defender. Blake plays the passing lanes well but can not keep fast guys in front of him. TO compete against a CP, D Will etc… we need that

  24. Beav95 says:

This is just stupid. Stick with the group you have. Let the grow together, we’re not winning any championships for a another few years, sit tight and we’ll be just fine. We don’t need Lee and the money it would cost..or the playing time it would bite into for our other young studs. Stupid conversation.

  25. BLAZERMAN says:

Jag, your outlook at the point is right on. Blake is a fillin starter. Some people think he’s our future pg, which is just stupid(the dudes a backup). Lee would shore up what we lack at the pf position and would be worth Outlaw and Rodriguez.
Lafrentz’s contract and Frye/Diogu our the pieces who can get us our point which I figure will be Hinrich. Blake has brought his scoring average up about 3pts this yr but his assists are down 2 plus a game with increased talent. Hinrich is better offensively and especially defensively.
Pritchard will upgrade the Blazers team for the present and future by the deadline. I think 2 moves will be done, most likely G Wallace, Hinrich or D Lee will be a Blazer.
