An ugly win for the Beavers in Vegas

September 13th, 2009 by Dwight Jaynes | 6 Comments | Filed in College football, Oregon State Beavers

In case the game story didn’t make your morning paper (it didn’t make mine), Oregon State got the ball back, trailing 21-20, with four minutes to play and at its own 20. Three minutes later the Beavers had traveled just 13 yards.

It was a ridiculous start to a game-winning drive but Oregon State finished the game off with a pressure-packed field goal from Justin Kahut that won it.

It was a pretty spotty effort from the Beavers. For the first half they couldn’t get Quizz Rodgers going and much of the game they didn’t seem willing to throw the ball downfield much. Sean Canfield hit 25 of his 31 passes but for just 198 yards.

I’m not sure an effort like that game is going to get the job done Saturday against Cincinnati.

College football Saturday…

September 12th, 2009 by Dwight Jaynes | 3 Comments | Filed in College football, Oregon Ducks, Oregon State Beavers, Portland State Vikings

Just a few thoughts before the games get going:

– Purdue is better than you think, Duck fans. If your team’s offense doesn’t get going, this one is going to be a real struggle. I do, though, expect a few first downs in the first half — no matter what.

– And Beaver fans, UNLV is better than YOU think, too. I expect a lot of points and a real shootout.

– Portland State fans, you’re not as good as you’re going to think you are after playing Southern Oregon this afternoon. Really, if you’re going to drop down and play a team at this level, at least play Linfield — so they’ll bring a large contingent of fans and make you some more money.
