Underwhelmed so far by the Blazer boys of summer

Yeah, you can get all pumped up about the Trail Blazers summer team being 2-0 if you want. But so far, I have to admit I’m a little disappointed by what I’ve seen.

Dante Cunningham and Jeff Pendergraph? For a couple of guys who spent all of last season in the NBA, I don’t think they’ve been all that impressive. Both are rushing a little bit and not letting the game come to them.

Patty Mills has been OK, pretty good, actually. But while I think he’s going to be on an NBA roster next season, I’m not sure it will be Portland’s. I’m not convinced Nate McMillan likes him — or likes small guards.

Now keep in mind that you can’t get too carried away with summer league either way, but I’m so far very unimpressed with Luke Babbitt.

Man, that kid has a long way to go before he’s anywhere close to Martell Webster. In fact, he has a long way to go before he has a chance of even getting into an NBA game, unless Portland trades all its other small forwards away. And don’t even think about playing him at power forward. At least right now, that doesn’t look possible.

He just doesn’t look as if he’s going to be ready. He’s got a lot of work ahead of him before training camp if he wants to carve out a role.

Sure, the Blazers are in desperate need of another point guard

You gotta recall Patty Mills from the D League! The team is down to just two point guards and everyone knows you need four or five!

Centers, though, I guess you don’t need ANY of those, right? Most unbalanced roster in the NBA?

Looking ahead to the Trail Blazer season

Geesh, enough about the 15th roster spot. Kevin Pritchard and Nate McMillan got to pick the first 14 players, isn’t it OK if Paul Allen, who is picking up the tab for all this frivolity, is allowed to choose No. 15?

The more I think about it, keeping Patty Mills is the better long-term play anyway. A year from now, he may have some value — either as a player or as a trade piece. A whole lot of people I respect a lot believe the kid can play. And given the roster logjam, it doesn’t hurt to have a guy around who isn’t ready to play.

It’s kind of funny, though, I thought it was Minnesota that was supposed to have the obsession with point guards?

I mentioned yesterday that I thought having so many players is hurting Portland’s preparation for the upcoming season. I firmly believe that to be true.

But I wouldn’t want that to be construed as thinking the Blazers won’t eventually find themselves. I believe they will but it may be quite a few games into the regular season.

I’ve seen good teams muddle through the exhibition season and then take off as soon as the real games start. It’s hard to motivate veteran players for exhibition games. I don’t think it’s going to be easy for this bunch. There are too many young players trying to figure out where they belong in the league.

But it’s going to happen for them. It might take a month — maybe even two. It might take an injury or two to thin the roster down. But there is too much talent here to expect the team to struggle for more than about 25 games.

And while it’s so easy to look at the offense and find fault, it’s still the defense that’s the most troubling. The Blazers so far have not improved at all from last season on the defensive end of the floor. And to get anywhere, they’ve got to tighten up — a lot. What we’ve seen so far just isn’t anywhere close to as good as they’ll need to get past the first round of the playoffs.

That’s why I expect Nic Batum and Greg Oden in the starting lineup when the season starts. They’re solid at the defensive end. And if that happens, the real intrigue will be as Oden introduces the New Greg to the real referees, assuming they’re back by then. He needs to start getting respect from those guys. If he does, the Blazers will be changed a great deal.

For the better.

It’s being reported that Patty Mills will get that 15th roster spot

Jason Quick is reporting that on 95.5 The Game, although I can’t yet find it at Oregonlive.com.

If that’s the case, I’d say one of two things has happened:

– Paul Allen doesn’t want to pay the veteran’s minimum to Ime or Collins and would prefer to save money with Mills and the paltry second-round minimum. You could get on Paul for that, but the guy has spent so much money on this team I wouldn’t blame him. After all, it is the 15th roster spot. A lot of teams don’t even keep 15.

– Paul likes Mills and would rather keep him than the other two. Don’t discount this possibility. Paul Allen pays attention to this stuff. He likes to think he’s a decent judge of talent.

I would also say this: In a year, Mills is likely to have a whole lot more value to the franchise than either of the other players.

Patty Mills forces the Trail Blazers into a personnel move

There is no question the Trail Blazers would have loved to retain the rights to point guard Patty Mills, a second-round pick. But as a draft choice, the team was forced to tender him a contract offer.

I believe Portland thought Mills would pass on that offer, and head off overseas to play this season. Then the Blazers would have retained his rights. Problem for the Blazers, though, is that he doesn’t seem to want any part of that and forced the team’s hand.

He signed that contract and now the Blazers must keep Mills on the 15-man roster or cut him. I don’t think there’s any way the guy is going to make the final roster – one more point guard is not what this team needs. But he’s done something a lot of other players haven’t been able to do — he’s found a way to force the franchise into a personnel move.

I would expect the Blazers are looking for a team that might be willing to give up a second-round pick for him. But that’s not likely. I believe he’ll probably get released. The other long shot is that in the future, the team thinks he’s a better prospect than Jerryd Bayless, in which case this move might force Portland to part with Bayless. But I seriously doubt it.

Good luck, Patty. And you’ve probably really gotten under the skin of a front office that seriously doesn’t like parting with young talent. The shadow of Jermaine O’Neal is very long and dark even now with this franchise.
