Oh, and about that FCC ruling, Blazer fans… never mind

January 22nd, 2010 by Dwight Jaynes | 11 Comments | Filed in Media, NBA, Trail Blazers

I heard this all day yesterday from both sides:

That FCC ruling two days ago has NO bearing on the situation in Portland. I’m beginning to think this thing will NEVER get settled.

What does that FCC ruling mean?

January 20th, 2010 by Dwight Jaynes | 7 Comments | Filed in Media, NBA, Trail Blazers

Yes, the FCC today finally ruled that Comcast must allow other carriers to pick up their programming — meaning, apparently, that there’s now a better chance of Portland Trail Blazer fans who are Directv or Dish customers to eventually be able to watch Comcast Sportsnet Northwest.

But I wouldn’t expect that to happen anytime soon. I’m sure that the ruling isn’t going to mandate Comcast do this for free. Obviously, there must be some mechanism in place to determine what’s a fair price for carriage. That’s been the problem all along, as the two sides have not been able to come to an agreement on a fair price for the satellite companies to pay Comcast.

Oh, and there’s always a possibility of court action, appeals, etc., so I’m afraid that we’re still probably not anywhere close to a resolution in a very frustrating predicament for a lot of Trail Blazer fans who cannot get Comcast Cable.

Yes, The Agency appears to be closed

January 15th, 2010 by Dwight Jaynes | 22 Comments | Filed in Media, Sports Business

All I really know for sure is that the landlord apparently changed the locks on all the doors because the lounge was behind in its rent payments. This was the site of “Talkin’ Ball” on Comcast Sportsnet and we had to move the last show over to the Blazers’ studio in the Rose Garden, which is a great locale.

I’m not sure where we’re going to be doing future shows but rest assured we will be continuing that series, although there are no shows scheduled after the next two games.

I would ask that you keep your comments civil in regard to The Agency.  This was NOT a national chain. A lot of very nice Portlanders spent a good deal of money to try bring this town a place they thought was needed. A lot of very nice people worked there, too.

My sympathies and best wishes go out to them.

A housekeeping note

December 28th, 2009 by Dwight Jaynes | 17 Comments | Filed in Me, Media

I really appreciate everyone’s patience with me. I wish I could blog a little more often, but it’s the holiday season and I’m kind of busy — so the thing I don’t get paid for is the first one to be put on hold.

As always, I appreciate your understanding. And at the same time,I would like to wish everyone the happiest of new years.

And in a related event, I’ll be spending New Year’s Day in Pasadena, as a part of the Comcast Sportsnet crew — getting ready for two-hour shows Thursday and Friday. And I’ll be joining the MSP boys Thursday morning from there, too. More on all that later.

What does this mean for satellite TV customers?

December 15th, 2009 by Dwight Jaynes | 4 Comments | Filed in Media, Trail Blazers

I don’t know. Honestly. But I hope this story gives some of us hope that one day soon we can watch Trail Blazer games and, especially, “Talkin’ Ball” on our dishes.

(Thanks, Clueless Vince!)

One more facet to the proposed Blazers’ webcasts

October 7th, 2009 by Dwight Jaynes | 13 Comments | Filed in NBA, Trail Blazers

After talking to several people at the exhibition game last night, it became apparent to me that a lot of them believe Portland’s decision to air its games on its web site this season may give the team leverage to help settle the Comcast-satellite TV disputes.

Make no mistake, Portland’s Comcast Sportsnet Northwest is but a small piece in the major war between Comcast and Directv. The customers of Directv saw Versus disappear from their channel guide a few weeks ago as part of this war, with its hockey and college football gone with it.

But the idea is that Comcast’s Trail Blazer exclusivity is gone if the games are also available on your computer. That, theory, makes Comcast more likely to negotiate a deal.

It’s still not a full solution to the problem, though. I don’t think gathering the family around a computer screen is anything close to cuddling up in front of that 52-inch plasma screen on your television.

At this point, I’ve given up trying to predict what’s going to happen in this negotiation. We have no choice but to sit back and see what’s going to happen next — innocent pawns in this major corporate battle.

No Comcast? You may be able to see Trail Blazer games this season after all

October 6th, 2009 by Dwight Jaynes | 23 Comments | Filed in NBA, Trail Blazers

I have learned today from two sources that telecasts of  Portland Trail Blazer games may finally be accessible to a much wider audience this season, even though there’s no word of any sort of immediate resolution in the battle between Comcast and the satellite TV companies.

During the offseason, the NBA apparently decided that teams could make live telecasts of their games available on their web sites, but left it up to individual teams to decide whether to do it. And what I’ve heard is that the Trail Blazers have already decided to stream all their games live this season on their web site.

I’m not sure how that impacts the relationship between Comcast Sportsnet and the Trail Blazers, but  it’s well known that the Trail Blazers have been frustrated that their games have not been available to a wider audience than just those with cable TV connections. Comcast has been negotiating with Directv and Dish Network for more than two years, trying to reach an agreement that would allow Comcast Sportsnet Northwest to be available via satellite. But no deal has been made and such a deal does not seem imminent.

There were several web sites last season that pirated the signal of Trail Blazer telecasts and aired them on the Internet. The NBA has attempted to halt that piracy with varying degrees of success.

Major League Baseball has opened up a solid revenue stream by making its games available for a price on the Internet. All MLB games throughout the season and in the postseason are available — for a price – on the web.

No word yet on what the NBA or the Blazers will set as the cost  of watching the games, whether they’d be available on a per-game basis or only on a season basis.

The Trail Blazers Tuesday refused comment on this story.

Fan Fest will be telecast live tonight

October 4th, 2009 by Dwight Jaynes | 12 Comments | Filed in Me, Media, Trail Blazers

Don’t forget, Comcast Sportsnet Northwest will telecast the Trail Blazers’ Fan Fest live from the Rose Garden, beginning at 5:30, with all kinds of features, interviews, etc.

I’ll be roaming around the sidelines with the wireless microphone getting interviews with coaches, players, etc. It should be a lot of fun and if you can’t make it over to the arena, this is your first chance to see what it all looks like for this season.

Upcoming media stuff

August 13th, 2009 by Dwight Jaynes | 3 Comments | Filed in Me, Media

Today and tomorrow Chad Doing (CIP to you insiders) and I will be hosting the Bald-Faced Truth from 3-6 p.m. on 95.5 The Game. And then next Tuesday, we will be together again on the Morning Sports Page, from 6-9 a.m. I’m already attempting to stockpile sleep.

Chad is great to work with and I’m very excited about the opportunity to ride his coattails again. And, of course, “Talkin’ Ball” continues its summer run every Wednesday night on Comcast Sportsnet at 6 o’clock. By the way, that show is going to be expanding even more come next Trail Blazer season — stay tuned for details.

“The Godfather” is becoming the king of all media

July 22nd, 2009 by Dwight Jaynes | 13 Comments | Filed in Me, Media

Well, not really. But I’m on 95.5 The Game all week from 3-6, sitting in for John Canzano on the BFT. And today, there’s another live “Talkin’ Ball” on Comcast Sportsnet.

Our guest tonight on “Talkin’ Ball” is Portland Trail Blazer assistant coach Joe Prunty, who was the team’s summer league’s coach in Las Vegas.

I would expect you to pay rapt attention to both shows today.
