Sorry about that…

I did three hours this morning on the MSP over 95.5 The Game. Now at work at a consulting job I’ve been doing during the day. Then to the Blazer game, followed by a live episode of “Talkin’ Ball.”

So, be patient with me. Not as many posts lately. I will blog when I can over the next few days but time is an issue sometimes. Sorry — but what the hell, it didn’t cost you anything to come here, did it?

Chew on this stuff:

– New Jersey Nets are 0-14 and coming in on the second of a back-to-back after losing at Denver last night. Man, the Blazers are going to pay later in the season for all these easy games to open the year.

– Who is going to get the Portland State football job? And does anyone care?

– How are the Beavers going to stop the Ducks’ spread option?

– Are the Ducks going to stop the Beavers’ fly sweep?

– Isn’t it great that we’re this geeked up about the Civil War more than a week away from the game?

No comments on our anti-american basketball star?

  2. Butterbean on Holgate says:

Who is going to get the Portland State football job?

    Stan Brock.

    God help us all.

  3. Godzilla says:

Saw Neil Lomax at the game last night, should have asked him if was being considered.

    • BarryTheMuslim says:

I hope not. He’s the worst. A legend in his own mind. He’d be a terrible choice.

Steve Coury, Speckman or Pflugrad. I’d be happy with any one of those.

  4. Hayduke says:

Make sure you get your rest Old Man. Your rabid fans need you at the top of your game.

  5. James says:

    Mark Speckman. No.

  6. KRK says:

I REALLY want a win over New Jersey tonight. I’ve always loved beating New Jersey, for some reason. And, Lawrence Frank is somebody that you love if he’s coaching your team, but hate if he’s on the other side. I just hate those fiery young coaches.

  7. Tiparillo says:

How are the Beavers going to stop the Ducks’ spread option?

Ball control (time of possession) and offensive effiecency – its the only hope.

I am not one to defend Roy as of late, but I can’t help but think what a disservice Canzano did to Roy with that article. I did not know of this practice, and, quite frankly, don’t care. I am not much of one for superficial displays of patriotism, such as the national anthem or a flag pin on one’s lapel.

December will be a good challenge for this team – their schedule has been too easy so far.

    • BarryTheMuslim says:

why is it a “superficial” display of patriotism to wear a lapel pin or to show reverence during the national anthem? Some might consider it a symbolic gesture of patriotism and appreciation for those who have sacrificed.

      • Barry from Salem says:

Hearing about Roy sidestepping the national anthem left a bad taste in my mouth. It’s about basic respect for the country that allows him to play a game for a living and make millions. Shame on him!

    Dwight,

    What about YOUR fans?

Where else could we go and be dissagreeable?

  10. marco says:

    Hey Dwight,

Congratulations on getting a daytime gig. I’m happy you found something during this tough time.

I don’t come from (or rabidly back) either Oregon or OSU, so I’m truly thrilled to get to sit back and enjoy what should be a great, meaningful football game next Thursday. Can’t wait.

    Dwight,

First glad to hear you are working more. You are not kind of guy to be happy just doing this site. I am ok if you slow on your posts here.

As read that Canzano column today, I thought why are you doing this? This must be dump on Roy year.

PSU football is irrevelant in this town and has been for a long time. And I don’t mean to bash it. I’m an OSU grad, but when my Beavs are off, I’ll try to get down to a game. I have gone to one each of the last two years.

But back on Oct. 17th, the Ducks and Beavs had a bye the same week and the Viks couldn’t draw 8,000. My friends and I looked around and couldn’t believe it. You could set off a bomb in large sections of the stadium and no one would get hurt. I told one of the security guards that we were OSU fans who just wanted to check out a PSU game. That was the week that there was an article in The Oregonian explaning how OSU has trouble selling out home games unless Washington or Oregon is playing. She mentioned that article and said that she had heard that OSU has trouble filling its stadium. When I told her that the stadium seats approx. 42,000 and that 40,000-41,000 had been attending, her eyes went wide.

It makes what Tim Walsh did make look amazing.

    There are so many obstacles.

    1) Once our in-state Pac-10 teams got good, that was the end of it. Watching Pac-10 teams is just more of a draw than watching Big Sky schools.

    2) At a commuter university, most of the students don’t care about intercollegiate athletics. It’s not their fault. Some of them are older, married, have kids, working on career changes, and it’s not a residential college type atmosphere. If most of the students don’t care about it, how is the rest of the city supposed to?

    3) PGE Park. I know it’s got history, but it’s not a good venue for football, baseball, or soccer.

    4) Because of the above two, it’s hard to draw some of the better recruits there.

I like Jerry Glanville, but I don’t think he realized how difficult the job would be. He announced his first recruiting season here that had a six-hour rule, and that would be that he wanted the best prospects within 6 hours of Porltand. He didn’t realize that if a kid gets an offer from a Pac-10 school, PSU has no chance. He was shocked, just shocked, his first recruiting season when some kids verbally committed to him and then backed out at the last minute when they got offers from Washington State. Well, everyone who reads this blog could have told him that.

And in retrospect, getting rid of Mouse Davis was a bad idea.

God help the new coach and the marketing people at PSU. They’re going to need it. This hire is crucial for the program’s future. The program is already teetering on the brink of being forgotten.

Just my two cents. Just hire someone who understands the culture of PSU and the obstacles here. I met Jerry Glanville last summer downtown and I liked him. But he didn’t understand until it was too late.

Someone hired you for a consulting job? Is there a new tabloid coming to town? Someone must be hard up.

  15. RayBourque says:

Dwight – Nice job hosting “Talkin Ball” tonight. Thanks for putting Ben on (if you had something to do with it).

  16. Zeph says:

    Ah he deleted my comment.

  17. Darrell Robinson says:

    Beavs stop the ducks by:
    1) DE’s must contain
    2) Paea blows up inside handoffs/runs
    3) Kristick spies Masoli
    4) get ducks to 3rd & long

Why doesn’t anyone ask how the ducks are going to stop the Beavers? OSU has same offensive yards/game as ducks.
