Some of my old pals at The Oregonian are messing with me

I mean, I’m SURE they are. On the cover of my sports section today was a list saying “Hall of Fame second basemen” — in response to the good news that local legend Joe Gordon finally made it to Cooperstown. Now I’m sure that somebody made up a special edition of that paper and slipped it into my paper box this morning.

There’s no way YOUR paper was like mine. I know that because there’s no way any paper would list Hall of Fame second basemen and not include Joe Morgan — the best of them all. Yeah — I know, mediocre commentator, great second baseman.

Anyway, somebody down there knows stuff like that drives me nuts and is intentionally trying to get under my skin. I caught you! Now I feel better.

I missed that. but i did not really read the list, I assumed they would have it right. If Big O told results I missed that. Allie Reynolds missed by one vote

And if they noted the veterans panel of players after WWII failed one more time to select anyone I missed that too. The leading vote getters were Ron Santo, Jim Kaat, Tony Oliva, Gil Hodges, and Joe Torre

All those guys belong in the Hall, Torre for sure as manager, but year after year they fiddle.

They need to change system if they can’t find way to select someone. This particular panel of living HOFers has never picked one.

I did read that. Joe Morgan not only 2nd baseman they missed.

    Dwight,

I work for The Oregonian and made up that list.

I did those four and looked up their stats, and was specifically told NOT to use Morgan as he was the best. I was told to do *comparables* of which Morgan is not.

As you mentioned — he is one of the best of all time. But to say he is hands down THE best makes you seem foolish.

You ever seen what Roger Hornsby accomplished?

  4. Kyle Mallory says:

The higher-ups, as you well know Dwight, make the call of what goes in, after all.

  5. Dwight Jaynes says:

It’s Rogers Hornsby, yes — familiar. But I’ll take Morgan.

Hey — not my intent to get anyone in trouble with his boss. My thing is this, if you’re not listing all the second basemen, just say “Comparable second basemen in the Hall” or something like that in the hed. The way it looked on the page made it seem like a list of the second basemen in the Hall.
