I should have mentioned this yesterday but I forgot:
The thing that also ticked me off last week was how many Duck fans torched Mike Bellotti. I heard all week, “I’d worry about us if this were a Bellotti team, but with Chip Kelly, I’m not worried.”
Come on, people. It was Mike Bellotti who has taken this program to where it is now. And it’s his players Kelly is winning with. I’m not demeaning Kelly in any way but Bellotti is probably the most important coach in the history of that school, in any sport.
Love the Ducks all you want, but honor your history. Mike Bellotti was special.

OK Dwight, your hyperbole just went over the top. “probably the most important coach in the history of that school, in any sport”, is without question, Bill Bowerman.
I know that you don’t really consider Track and Field a sport, but they do in Eugene, and in Eugene, Bowerman is The Father, Phil Knight is The Son, and Prefontaine is The Holy Ghost.
I’d say there are more than a few Duck basketball coaches who could make an argument as well.
Or maybe the REAL track fans consider Bill Dellinger (Pres actual coach) a more fitting SON than Phil Knight in the holy trinity. In any case he is the greatest Oregon runner ever.
Bill Hayward is also pretty amazing as a coach.
Listen to Barry the Muslim.
Also: granted, Mike got this program where it is. Hes like the Abraham Lincoln to Rich Brook’s George Washington.
Point is: one should take note of how quickly and easily big balls chip has won the hearts and minds of quackerbackers. So far, hes got literally everything right.
Although I remember numerous calls for Chip’s head after the Boise State game…
In reality, it’s too early to make a judgment on Kelly yet. He hasn’t screwed up (Good), but he hasn’t had to win with his own players yet.
Barry — it’s all about the money. One Ducks game in the new Autzen draws more people than Bowerman put in Hayward Field for a decade. You can’t put track and field on the same level as football — no matter how many championships they won. Without football, there wouldn’t be a track program.
Without NIKE there might not be a football program there, but if you’re making an chicken and egg comparison, I think Track and Field success precedes football success in Eugene.
Without Track and Field, there’d be no Nike, and without Nike, Phil’s wallet would be a lot slimmer, and without Phil’s big far wallet, the football program wouldn’t have all their bright shiny bells and whistles, and without those bells and whistles, the good recruits would be staying in California.
And without all those good recruits, the Ducks would be the Cougars.
Dwight,
I agree wholeheartedly. These idiots are probably guys who became fans after we went to the Fiesta Bowl, then suffered through some bad finishes, not realizing where we were just 15 years ago when MB took over. We should enshrine his ’stache in the Cassanova Canter. Also, the Bowerman point was a pretty good one from Barry the Muslim
Again….someone calls in with a stupid comment like that and you take the liberty of painting an entire fan base?
Without Bellotti, there is probably no Oregon football program of today. I think everyone recognizes that.
There were things about Bellotti that may have frustrated us in the past, but we owe him a lot. We especially owe him for selecting Kelly has his replacement.
Dwight,
Since your on the topic of blasting fan bases, how about you do a little piece on Oregon State fans and their constant presence on Oregon Duck forums…
Why do you suppose they are so enamored of the Ducks? They have a good team, yet their satisfaction/happiness seems to solely depend on whether the Ducks lose.
Go ahead, check it out. The Ducks just reinstated Blount and the first 20 comments are all Beaver fans trolling the boards.
What does that say about a fanbase?
It’s one thing to be an avid, even unrealistic supporter of your own team, but to hang on ever action of your rival is just kind of sad.
Both programs have their share of a-hole fans; I avoid Duck fanboards for my part. I’ve seen plenty of Duck trolls on Beaver boards.
Who is worse? I have no idea.
Dwight, keep in mind that those duck fans you are talking about are students and young. They are the same duck fans that were calling for the benching of Masoli and booing him, the same duck fans that wanted Ernie Kent fired after last year, when he had like 6 freshman and no sr.
I was born and raised in Eugene, I remember watching Bill Musgrave, Derrick Loville, Latin Berry, and those guys. I agree with what you said Dwight, and it gets on my nerves as a Duck fan. But all I can think is that these fans are young and don’t know what being a duck fan was like in the 80,s.
Speaking of Bellotti, what about Rich Brooks, he really got us started in the right direction, then MB took us to another level, and we hope will Chip takes us to the next level.
Why is it that almost all Duck fans refer to their coach as “Chip”? Yet, they didn’t call the former coach “Mike”. Beaver fans don’t call their coach “Mike”.
Are all the Duck fans close personal friends of “Chip”?
The name “Mike”, in Oregon collegiate sports, is kinda ambiguous. Riley, Belotti. Only one Chip, though.
Nope, Rich Brooks was the most important coach the UofO has ever had. That’s why his name is on the field. Any good Duck fan knows that and understands why.
Rich Brooks NEVER won until MB got here. Rich Brooks was a loser, a Beaver, and he left at the first whiff of success. The fact that they named that field after him makes me sick. Don’t romanticize the past, we have stats so that these things will be remembered as they occured.
Amen. Rich Brooks was as crappy at Oregon as he has been at Kentucky.
even if i cant spell;)
Gee Barry perhaps you answered your own question.
There were two head football coaches named Mike in this state. Do you think that has anything to do with it?
It was the same way when “Dennis” coached the Beavers.
But folks call your bro-in-law “Craig”.
Belotti definently got the most out of the players he had.
More importantly, he developed the program to be a consistent bowl eligible team. He made believers out of some very influential people that the ducks could have a consistent top 20 footbal program. Many people invested in this program because they believed in Belotti and his ability to run such a program.
Like him or not, he made the ducks winners
Brooks was a jerk with about as much personality as a doorknob. It was getting Mike as OC that
got things rolling. And on to be Head Coach
as the best one ever in Oregon history !!
The typical high-ego work-aholic head coach
failed with his marriage…as do so many others.
His loss. But back to the gridiron, he is
still THE best..and will get HIS name on
something big, when that time comes.
He deserves it.
