Now it’s the Greg Oden Phone

Sorry if it seems like it’s the Oden Chronicles around here, but you gotta go where the news is. And the latest is that Oden has his own signature telephone coming out… with some of the money going to his favorite charity. Ricky Davis of the Clippers immediately announced he’ll give $500 to the first person on his team who can prank Oden on his own phone.

The phone story:

Greg Oden and Cricket Unveil Limited Edition “Greg Oden O-Fōn”
The Portland Trail Blazers Center Debuts a Signature Phone Exclusive to Cricket; Proceeds will Benefit Oden’s Non-Profit Partner, Oregon Mentors.

PORTLAND – October 23, 2008 – Portland Trail Blazers center Greg Oden today dished out an assist to Oregon Mentors by unveiling the Greg Oden O-Fōn, a Limited Edition phone exclusive to Cricket Wireless that will go on sale November 7. Cricket, a leading provider of unlimited wireless services, will donate proceeds from the sale of the Greg Oden O-Fōn to Oregon Mentors, a non-profit that Oden hand-picked for the donations. Trail Blazers fans can pre-order their Greg Oden O-Fōn starting today by visiting any Cricket store in Oregon or Southwest Washington.

Oden has worked with Cricket since the summer to develop the Greg Oden O-Fōn. To create his signature phone, Oden determined the two features he was personally most interested in: a full keyboard for text messaging, and a gorgeous display to view websites, videos and picture messages. In addition, Oden worked with Cricket to create a customized back cover for the phone that includes an engraving of his jersey and his autograph.

“I’ve been using Cricket since this summer, when I realized Cricket gives unlimited minutes and text messages. Believe me, it’s important to have a full keyboard for texting, but seeing that keyboard on my own signature phone, that’s wild,” said Oden. “I’m excited to be working with Cricket on the O-Fōn, and I want everyone in Oregon and Southwest Washington to buy one so we can raise as much money as possible for Oregon Mentors.”

The Limited Edition Greg Oden O-Fōn will be available while supplies last. Included in the box are a variety of exclusive materials that Portland Trail Blazers fans can only get at Cricket with their purchase of a Greg Oden O-Fōn:

– A Limited-Edition Greg Oden O-Fōn handset etched with Oden’s autograph and jersey
– A Greg Oden Topps Rookie Card designed exclusively for Cricket
– A personal “thank you” message from Greg
– Text messages from Greg throughout the season, exclusively for O-Fōn owners
– An exclusive discount on Trail Blazers merchandise
– Exclusive coupons for discounted Cricket accessories, including accessories for the O-Fōn

“We do things differently here at Cricket, and we’re not afraid to have fun. Greg’s the same way, which is why we’ve enjoyed developing the O-Fōn with him,”said Neil Grubb, president and CEO of Cricket LCW, the Portland-based provider of Cricket service in Oregon and Southwest Washington. “I’d love to see the O-Fōn sell out this holiday season and have Cricket make a large donation to Oregon Mentors. What better way to show other NBA cities how much Oregon cares not just about the Trail Blazers, but about our children and community?”

Throughout the NBA season, Oden will also be using Cricket’s Mobile Broadband service on his laptop computer. Oden has used Cricket’s Mobile Broadband since this summer. Cricket debuted its high-speed wireless Internet service in Portland in November 2007.

The No. 1 overall pick in the 2007 NBA Draft, Oden has been a household name in basketball circles since his days as a McDonald’s All-American at Lawrence North High School, where he twice earned Parade Magazine’s National Player of the Year honors, twice won USA Today’s Player of the Year award and was only the second player ever to repeat as the Gatorade National Player of the Year. As a freshman at Ohio State University, Oden led the Buckeyes to the NCAA National Championship game, earning on-court accolades such as Associated Press All-American First Team, Conference Defensive Player of the Year and First Team All-Big Ten.

Just a guess here. . . on the day these phones go on sale, you better get in line early.
