More about online piracy of TV feeds
Pat O. in the comments of the previous item posted this link to a story the New York Times did on this exact topic (thanks Pat!). Gavin Dawson and I were speaking about it this morning on the MSP.
As Gavin pointed out, as soon as the picture quality improves on computer screens — and how long can that take? — this thing is going to be huge. But honestly, if you haven’t poked around on the Web looking for stuff, I can tell you that there isn’t a pay per view event, a big NFL game or anything else that isn’t out there somewhere — for free.

This past summer, I know some folks used proxy servers to fool the BBC and CBC computers to believing they were originating their connection from Britain or Canada to watch their far superior live broadcasts of the Summer Olympics for free, getting around the territorial monopoly of NBC.
Okay of topic but I’m going to try to get away with it since I heard you on with Gavin this morning. So as soon as you get off the phone Gavin starts in with how we are not really play-off team. That is certainly debatable but he made it sound obvious that we wouldn’t be in the playoffs. We are at the 8 spot right now after that tough schedule. Now that it only gets easier for us, doesn’t it make sense that we would go up a bit?
I’m not saying that it isn’t debatable and not worth talking about but when he “doesn’t know what the listeners are thinking” when the majority vote that the Blazers make the playoff in the 95.5 poll, it makes me start to wonder if he needs to revoke his “People’s Champ” title.
Anyway, Gavin aside, your thoughts on the Blazers making it to the playoffs?
Here’s a solution. Broadcast all these games on cable without all the suscriptions (like NBA League Pass and such) and increase the advertising charges because your ratings go up, right? Fighting piracy is like the fight against drugs. It costs you money and that’s it.
BTW, in Seattle last night we could not watch the Blazer game because it was being shown on KGW and not Comcast. A few of us Blazer fans up here are a little frustrated with that (even though we are really happy about CSN airing the games anyways) and rather then dropping $200 to watch 20 something Blazer games we find alternative means or don’t watch the game at all.
