Major-league Oregonians

November 19th, 2008 by Dwight Jaynes | Filed under Baseball.

Newly named Seattle Mariners manager Don Wakamatsu was born in Hood River, Ore. He attended high school in the Bay Area but we’re still entitled to count him as an Oregonian who once played major-league baseball.

So how many from this state have played in the majors? Wikipedia says 82 — with some names on there I didn’t realize made it to the big leagues. It’s kind of fun to see how many of them you remember.

  1. They didn’t mention Bucky Jacobsen from Hermiston.

Or Bobby Doerr. I know he was not born here, but he is an Oregonian. One of our HOFers

They also left out Rick Wise. Rose City Little League, Madison High School star, and then 19 years in the majors. Big omission there….

  4. They also missed Trevor Wilson.

I guess you get what you pay for with Wikipedia. :)

Isn’t Mitch Williams from Oregon? I would swear I remember his team (Milwaukie?) beating Tom Campbell’s Newberg Tigers for the state title in the early 80’s. Speaking of Tom Campbell… great coach, great teacher. One of the best teachers I ever had.

  6. Mitch Williams pitched at West Linn. Wikipedia is notorious for being incorrect.

This list was of players BORN in Oregon, I assume… that’s why people like Mike Diaz and Dave Kingman and Richie Sexson are on it. I think many of the Oregonians mentioned in the comments grew up here, but may not have been born here. Just a guess…
