Lents Park is safe . . . whew!

June 23rd, 2009 by Dwight Jaynes | Filed under Baseball, small-town Portland.

The pristine wilderness that is Lents Park — the Yosemite of southeast Portland — has been saved from becoming a nasty old ballpark. Whew, what a relief!

I’m sure the way is cleared now for that entire neighborhood to become the new Pearl District.

Dwight, you know it isn’t about the “pristine” Lents area being disrupted. Its about building stupid, and thats what a Lents or suburban ballpark would be.

    Your so silly….

Wait…are you being sarcastic? Is that what’s going on here?

I can’t take the city of Portland anymore, this is ridiculous. For the last time…tear down the Coliseum and resurrect a nice ball park. Place a memorial where it can be seen and appreciated, not buried in the basement. I can’t believe a top 25 market can’t figure out how to make anything happen…ever.

  4. Kyle says:

The unwashed hippie masses don’t deserve, nor would appreciate a ball park. Let’s find some land in Hillsboro or Beaverton and build a park out on the west side.

  5. tater says:

Let’s put it on a barge in front of your home. Surely you’d have no problem with that.

  6. Dwight Jaynes says:

Bring it on, Tater… bring it on! Just make sure I can see the whole field from here

I wonder what it would take to build it in the Russell District over by the city shops off Interstate. Maybe lease some parking from Emmanuel and some from Kaiser? Of course that would mean Paulson wouldn’t get any parking revenue, so that’s probably out. But it’s an idea. Would make a great location for a park.

Dwight, It’s like I said from the start. Sammy and the boys downtown will screw this deal up royally, and there is no getting around it!

  9. EngineerScotty says:

My thoughts still are a) build a new transit center at the Rose Quarter; and b) build the ballpark where Union Station now sits. Ballparks must be on the west side of rivers, after all. :)

Frankly, if the city is unwilling to build on the Coliseum site I would love to see a Major League sized ballpark located near the south junction of I-205 and I-5 just to the west of I-5. WES could run right beside the ballpark and there would be good access for parking. Of course we would need to find someone with deep pockets to build it because the politicians outside the city of Portland wouldn’t even consider the financial deals presently on the table. There is also that pesky problem of finding a Major League team.

    Don’t go away mad…

  12. Greg says:

More important, Memorial Coliseum is about to be preserved. Maybe we can get Lenin’s tomb and put it in there.

  13. Bumpity says:

Phew !!!! That was a close one….. Now we can focus millions of dollars on a soccer team that will be without a league in less than 5 years…

  14. bluetwinbill says:

That dumb ass Jack above will fight a stadium WHEREVER they try to put it.

I’m so relieved that Lent’s park has been saved!!! Now, we can move forward with making it the National Park it should have always been! Yosemite watch out!

In other news, I hope the city isn’t contemplating putting a new ballpark on the terminal 1 site in NW Portland. I mean, that terminal is a thing of beauty. They just don’t make ‘em like that any more. If any more of this nonsense involves T1, I am prepared to start the “Friends of Terminal 1″ protest group. Is it too late to get this thing on the national historic register?
