Roy to undergo knee surgery

August 13th, 2008 by Dwight Jaynes | Filed under Trail Blazers.

This is not good news for Trail Blazer fans. On the positive side, if you’re going to have an injury, this is an OK time to have one. It’s a relatively minor surgery and recovery time isn’t expected to be lengthy.

Nothing to worry about, really — but this brings to mind something we’ve talked about previously. With the style of game Roy plays, you have to be concerned about his ability to stay healthy throughout his career. And while he’s known for his ability to take punishment on the way to the basket and still score, that style is eventually going to cost him time on the injured list.

As he matures, he’s obviously going to become more of a perimeter player — saving those punishing drives for game-deciding situations. I think if I were coaching him, I’d already be talking to him about settling for medium-range stuff a little more often. You hate to do that with a player as talented as Roy at going to the basket — but we saw him hit the deck too many times last season.

Pull up a little more often, Brandon. In the long run, you’ll play more games.

  1. Maybe Brandon Roy saw that Greg Oden had knee surgery and how fun it was and just wants to imitate him
