Early line on the Portland State football coach
I believe it’s Nigel Burton, defensive coordinator at Nevada — who is considered a hot property and dynamite recruiter. I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s named in the next two or three days.

I hope this is not the pick by PSU .i would hope borges, Brock or Lupfer would be the pick over Burton Or Speckman
Seriously Jeff? I would never have dreamed that PSU could get a guy like Burton. Burton is a guy that’s moving up, and fast. If one of his stops along the way is PSU, we should feel darn lucky.
I was hoping for Borges…He is brilliant and would be perfect in guiding us to a big sky title
I would have like to see Lupfer but Nigel is a great choice too. I played under both and each were great.
Hmmm Hardly think PSU should hire a guy on his way up. He will be gone in 3 years at most. And why would somebody on way up be interested in PSU? where a few losing seasons almost a guarantee.
Disagree,
PSU wants someone on his way up to elevate program. A coach has to win to move up to the next level
pat,Borges has been rumored to tell PSU he would like this to be his last job. I would see this job has a stepping stone for Burton. “never get a guy like Burton”every team has a guy like burton
Hey what Happened to Robin Pflugrad in all this ?
Maybe Speckman turned them down. He turned down the Ducks.
For the record, Willamette is one of the most difficult places to win at and recruit for. Their admission standards are off the charts for Football.
GO BEARCATS!
Isn’t there a law of the universe banning guys named Nigel from coaching American football?
I would think that any coach worth his salt would view PSU as a steppingstone job. It’s about moving up and taking advantage of opportunities.
I don’t want the next PSU coach to want to retire here.
I have been to PGE Park for many Beavers baseball games and PSU football games. I understand that the atmosphere for Timbers games is awesome. I know that PGE has a storied history. But so does McArther Court and even the U of O realized that all things have a shelf life, history notwithstanding, which is why they finally built a new basketball arena to replace “historic” McArthur Court.
But the next time you go to PGE Park, look around and ask yourself if you’d want to coach there for even five years.
It’s made what Tim Walsh did here seem even more remarkable.
PSU is custom made for a young rising guy like Burton. He’s young, never been a head coach, been a successful recruiter, position coach, and coordinator. Head coach is the next logical procession.
I’d be disappointed if he turned PSU around and then DIDN’T want to find a better job. It’s what America is all about, capitalizing on your talents, getting results, and then using them to move up in your profession. I have been to PSU games and think there are some good teams and coaches in the Big Sky.
But if it isn’t obvious already, the Big Sky is NOT the top of the profession in college football.
lets see on one hand you have Al Borges and on the other Nigel Burton i believe the scale tips Borges way………….In My own opinion anyway ,lets just get a new coach and support the team
FYI It is being reported in San jose that Both Borges and Burton will?have interviewed for h/coach @San Jose State reportedly ,Believe it or not the front runneris Ty Willingham
Burton would be an excellent hire. Knows Oregon well having coached at OSU, high energy guy who really relates well to his players. Really, though, a hell of a football mind.
I had always hoped that he would come back around as a DC if Banker were to move on but it appears he’s already shot past that point in his career.
Good for Burton, good for PSU if they pull the trigger.
wow what a great performance from a Nigel Burton coached Defense last night vs SMU ,if this is what we get to look forward to GOODNIGHT NURSE!!!!!!!
