Come on, how naive are we around here?

No offense intended for anyone, but really — are we such a bunch of rubes around here that we thought we’d actually be able to buy great seats for NCAA regional games in the Rose Garden?

Come on, by the time they get done taking care of sponsors, assorted NCAA poobahs and the fans from the schools involved, there are barely any seats left to watch what could be some very mismatched first-round games. Honestly, I thought everyone knew that. Next thing you know, you’ll be telling me that if the NBA All-Star Weekend ever comes to Portland we all wouldn’t be able to hand-pick our seats for whatever event we want.

I have very little use for the NCAA, a group so busy grabbing dollars wherever it can find them that it has forgotten its purpose. It’s the same pious bunch that made Oregon do away with the Sports Action lottery in order to get these games. Yet it’s the same group that allows a league to play its conference tournament in Las Vegas. And yes, it’s the people who want to keep a BCS system going when a national playoff would be more fun, more lucrative and more fair.

There are ways to get good seats. I watched the Ducks play in Nashville a few years back and ended up with great seats. The whole key is to find where team supporters are seated and when they leave then go sit in their seats. Once their team is eliminated most fans don’t stick around for the weekend. In fact the year before in Dallas my buddies and I got some fans to sell us their tickets cheap because they wanted to go home after their team got beat. Just takes a little creativity and of course the ticket to get you in the building. I learned to put in early for the NCAA lottery where they distribute their limited amount of tickets.

Or how about just find an alumni to buy you seats? Seriously, it’s pretty easy to get good tickets through alumni associations, especially when they are playing far from home.
