Clarifying our comment policy

April 2nd, 2009 by Dwight Jaynes | Filed under Blogs, Me.

It’s come up a few times recently, because I’ve removed some comments and actually banned a commenter. Basically, we’re about common sense here at dwightjaynes.com.

We encourage dissent with the writer of the posts, but we don’t condone personal attacks on the writer or on other commenters. Just make your argument without the insults. In other words, be nice. Be civil. Be polite.

See, at this point, I pretty much write this thing for myself. If you enjoy it — great! Come here every day, recommend it to your friends, comment your tail off, enjoy yourself.

If you don’t like the blog, if you simply can’t stand my stuff, please just do not come here anymore. Certainly, I’m not going to change a whole lot and you’re probably not, either — although I think over time you might understand more about what I do and may come to enjoy it. If I upset you at some point talking about your favorite team or favorite sport, I’ll probably amuse or please you another time.

I’m not a fan of a particular team. I’m a fan of the games themselves and of sports in general. You’re not going to find a lot of rah-rah stuff here but that doesn’t mean I have it in for your team or your school or your favorite player. I don’t. And I do this thing pretty much for fun. Which means I’m not in the mood to take a lot of gas from commenters. In the old days, when working for a newspaper, I had no choice. I took all the insults politely — they were customers, after all.

But I don’t have to take it now. So don’t bother, OK? I’m good at ignoring it, but even better at just shutting it down. I’ve been proud of the fact that since the very beginning, our comments here have been smart, funny, to the point and civil — and we’re going to try to keep it that way.

Thank you.

My personal opinion is that all blog comments should follow the tone, for the most part, of the blogger himself. If the blog is civil but sharp witted, then comments should follow the same tone. If the blog is mean and dimwitted then the blogger should expect the same.
So, having said that Dwight…The comments on this blog should be insightful, fair and civil but very direct (without mincing words). I have never seen you cross the line in any of your posts and I think it is best when those who post attempt to follow your lead. I for one, have stopped reading many of the comments and just stick with your posts for the most part.

Dwight, I read your blog because I respect your opinions. I don’t always agree with you but I respect you because you are always reasonable IMO. I like to read other people’s comments about your post, but only when they are real and not designed to bring attention to themselves. I ignore those. I appreciate this no non-sense policy.

  4. Years and years and years ago when Dwight wrote for the Oregonian, I didn’t really like him or what he had to say about the Blazers. I would still read what he had to say though, (funny how that works). Over time, I became jaded about the Blazers and began to see the things Dwight wrote were true, (for the most part). I think Dwight just pretty much writes it as he sees it and if you have a huge bias one way or the other you might not always want to hear what he says. Eventually, I found great enjoyment in reading Dwight and found myself agreeing with him more and more. Just remember Dwight… for all the negative people out there, there are also alot of us that appreciate what you do. Keep up the good work.

Had to change my moniker…too many Dans!

I guess it is something I just don’t get is the hostility that people have for others who don’t share the same viewpoint. Disagree, have a discussion to perpetuate an idea and move on. Something has gone wrong in our society that people feel threatened by a different view and then get angry when someone won’t conform to their ideals.

It is even true with our government anymore. Disagree with anything they do, whether liberal or conservative and you can expect media ostracism to begin. Sorry got side tracked…..just tired of the personal attacks from every direction.

Dwight…..sad that it is, I’m thankful for your comment policy. Dissent is the great American way. But some of this stuff has gone too far and the personal insults are not in the spirit of traditional dissent.

And besides….it’s sports, not economic policy.

  7. Tree says:

FANTASTIC points Dwight…. (see – I did watch you guys after the Utah game). This is a nice place to come without the personal attacks that seem to break out on the other public forums. Keep up the good work.

  8. Carla Axtman says:

The best blogs (IMO) allow for the most open commenting policy possible. That means that strong (and sometimes irreverent or harsh) dissent is part of the mix, in general.

You must obviously do what you feel is best, Dwight. And not reading comments here all that often, I’m not sure how messy your comments have been. But I encourage you to be very measured in your disposition toward the edgier. I suspect in the end you’ll find your blog better for it.

    2 cents,

    Carla

My first post to any blog was yours only a short time ago because after reading several other blogs about the Blazers and then reading some of the comments, they often reminded me of middle school boys daring other boys to knock chips off their shoulders. Most comments on your blog, however, seemed more mature; banning immature writers who believe it’s a good argument when they call another writer a name is a reasonable policy.

I became a Blazer fan when I moved to Oregon in 1983 and I read a lot of your stuff in the Oregonian during the ensuing years and my memory is I disagreed with your views more often than I agreed.

I’ve been old and wise enough for some time now to know that the hard part in writing, and yes, the courageous part, is to come up with the original thought–it’s pretty easy to comment on other people’s ideas. Thanks for all your original thoughts over the years and I’m glad I found your blog.

    You the man Dwight!

I’m 34 and have been reading your stuff for as long as I remember. In middle school checking out what Clyde the Glide did, your opinions and articles are top notch. You have been here forever and know the ins and outs of sports in Oregon. I love the site and visit everyday!

I appreciate what you do. And you said it best. ‘I’m really good at ignoring it, but even better at shutting it down’…

And your right, there is nothing better than when a player gets on a roll and is hitting shots from every where. Tajuan Porter and Bryce Taylor come to mind…

Especially when the player is 5′6′ and has to shoot it from another area code just to get the shot off, or has to bank it off the rafters to get it over another player.

    You the man Dwight!
    Bring your blanket!

  11. Charlie says:

I love your policy Dwight. Just like some of these other commentors I may not completely agree but we all have our own opinions, and I like yours a lot. I still feel like you write better than people of the oregonian.

Oh by the way I commented on the Referee & Fans post you did, and asked about a comment about Greg Oden. IF you have time to answer that, thank you.

  12. lefty says:

Dwight good for you. I have scaled way back on reading the replies. I enjoy reading varying opinions about teams and players. and for that this has been good, but some of the back and forth personal stuff is not worth the trouble.

I do not blog, hardly knew that was what I was doing here. I simply enjoy what Dwight writes.

  13. peacequiet says:

    Dwight,I’m here for one reason.
    You.
I enjoy(and always have) your opinion.

What’s nice is that there are a regular group here now that
    add to the nicety.

It’s right high on my regular stops on checking on the
whole NBA,not just my team the Blazers.
That’s what I like about it,you cover it all.

I particularly love it before and after a game.
Then it becomes my #1 stop !

    Keep it going !

  14. Jacksi says:

I have always enjoyed reading your stuff. I don’t always agree, but I always see where ‘yer comin’ from.

  15. Barry says:

It’s good to have some parameters. It’ll be nice to read the posts without the personal venom. Thanks, Dwight

  16. Robby Benson says:

    Hrrumph Hrrumph Hrrumph…….

  17. j says:

I never did understand the meanness of some of the commenter’s. I am with you, if you don’t like it don’t come here and read it! It seems like this is something you are doing to be able to continue writing in some capacity and as an outlet for your thoughts about some sports topics. Keep it up, I for one enjoy reading.

  18. luanne53 says:

A thousand thanks for your blog. I hope that you stick with it.
    Go Blazers!

  19. CVD2312 says:

I agree that the comments usually follow the tone of the article. When you openly criticize and degrade a basketball program and a tournament that they are playing in, for example, do you expect everyone to just accept that?

  20. kilntym says:

Oh, Dwight. Sorry to see this. Frankly, those people who post that GO is a bust or to fire Nate actually deserve the treatment they get. But, since I enjoy this blog sooo much, I will refrain from telling those people what I really think.

  21. “I agree that the comments usually follow the tone of the article. When you openly criticize and degrade a basketball program and a tournament that they are playing in, for example, do you expect everyone to just accept that?”

I’m an OSU fan, but I really don’t think Dwight was degrading anything. He was pointing out the facts. The Beavers had a losing record and the tournament they are in is a joke. Seriously.

  22. 1duck71 says:

as long as he stays healthy and gives us 1000+ yards, i don’t care if he doesn’t attend any classes after football season.
