Celtics cut Darius Miles

October 20th, 2008 by Dwight Jaynes | Filed under NBA, Trail Blazers.

Trail Blazer fans can relax. Darius isn’t going to count against their salary cap just yet. Careful, though — don’t get too comfortable … the Boston roster is pretty good. A lesser team might find a place for him and Danny Ainge let him go in time for Miles to shop around for another squad.

I saw this one coming. Based on preseason minutes he was competing neck and neck with the Celtic’s 2008 first round draft pick, JR Giddons. All other players were averaging significantly more minutes (aside from Sam Cassell, their “assistant coach” roster spot). I just couldn’t see them cutting “young upside” for “spent veteran.”

I agree that there is still time for Miles, I would have much preferred they cut him a week from now. The question becomes: is there a team that will take a chance on Miles based on 7 days of camp (if they sign him today). I imagine that most teams by now have an idea of who they are planning on keeping\cutting. Adding Miles to the mix for any team would be akin to a preseason roster mulligan and would also be a pretty good indication of a roster in turmoil.
