Blount is out ( of games)

September 4th, 2009 by Dwight Jaynes | Filed under Uncategorized.

He can keep his scholarship and practice with the team. But no games. Honestly, I would not want the guy around my team. Of course he obviously does not like practice (or school) anyway so he will take hike.
I would assume he will find an agent to bankroll him until the June NFL draft.
A sad story, all in all. A shame he ever enrolled there.

Glad to see the season long (senior season) suspension at the very least. Good for you Oregon in showing this is not what our state, our schools, and our sports programs are about.

  2. EngineerScotty says:

I don’t mind at all that he remains on the team… hopefully things will be better this way.

  3. Bumpity says:

    He is undraftable…

    • EngineerScotty says:

I suspect he’ll play on Sundays, assuming he stays in shape.

Whether he’ll have a good NBA career is another matter. A bad temper won’t keep him out of the NFL–there are lots of thugs and jerks in pro football; and one of the more obnoxious bozos in the NFL is an ex-Beav, lest anyone need reminding. Given the success of guys like Ray Lewis and even Vick– cold-cocking an opposing player and going bezerk after a tough loss isn’t likely to keep him out of the pros.

What NFL teams DO have to be concerned with in regards to Blount is probably not that he’ll become the next Vick or Pacman. If I were an NFL guy scouting Blount, I’d worry more about him turning into the next Ricky Williams or Onterrio Smith. (At least Mr. Whizzenator managed to make it through Eugene without major incident, after getting the boot at Tennessee…)

      • Panama says:

how does a duck celebrate an ass-whuppin?

        with Blount-Force!

      • ean says:

I dunno if Blount is good enough for the NFL. He got all of his yards last year after JJ had worn the other teams down. Also he played a lot in garbage time. Look at the big games he has played in and you can see he has disappeared. Factor in his work ethic and I would bet against him ever making a 53 man roster.

  4. Kyle says:

I listened to Chip Kelly’s speech about it and he handled it very well. I agree completely with his decision. Blount will never play for Oregon in a game again which is what I thought he deserved.

But like Chip said, he is a young man who made a mistake and we aren’t going to throw him out on the street. He still has a chance to get an education now. He is a young man who needs discipline and guidance and now has a chance to get it. Helping a troubled young man turn himself around is far more important than winning football games. He lost his temper and punched a guy and then went after some fans who taunted him. Acceptable? No. Thats why he’ll never play football again for the Ducks. But worth destroying his life over? Worth taking away what could be his only chance to get an education and the structure he needs to better his life? Come on.

  5. Jason Grigsby says:

    @kyle summarizes my thoughts well.

I’m with Dwight that the team is better off without him, but at the same time, the program needs to be a place that people have an opportunity to learn from their mistakes. If he doesn’t take that opportunity, then so be it.

  6. colganc says:

    Kyle,

The guy doesn’t seem capable of handling college/university. I didn’t realize college/university is supposed to be a babysitting and parenting service.

    • Kyle says:

Perhaps not. But that is up to him now to learn from this, take advantage of the opportunities he still has and hopefully be a better person for it.

  7. Panama says:

I think he could learn a thing or 2 from brett favre

  8. ODENISGOD says:

good screw college football!! thats not even real sports!!! they dont even have a real champion at the end because old fat white men want to get more rich. see you in the NFL Blount!! float like a butterfly sting like a bee! oh and chip u suck!

  9. ean says:

Classy move by the Ducks. Kicking him out is the right thing and offering him UofO’s services is a great gesture on behalf of the UofO… and this is from a Beaver fan. I do however fear that he will once again not take advantage of the educational opportunity he has been given. I highly suspect that he has juiced for much of his career and drugs are a tough habit to break.

  10. John Thomas says:

Losing team, losing attitude. Enjoy the Kelly era, it’ll be short.

Look on the bright side, at least now you’ll have a third rate team to match your academics.

P.S. I know academics is an awfully big word, so have someone from a state that funds education somewhat better than third word states like Mississippi or Afghanistan explain it to you.

  11. Kevin says:

Excuse me while I disrupt the echo chamber here. I have been a big Duck fan since the days of Dan Fouts, Bobby Moore, and Greg Specht, but this whole things stinks to high heaven. All the moralizing from on high, from the holier than thou, is sickening.

Just so there is no confusion, Blount was an idiot for doing what he did, and he deserved a suspension. A full season suspension though is ridiculous, 2 to 3 games would be appropriate. He made a mistake, no make that a serious and stupid mistake, but the punishment is completely out of proportion with the crime.

Chip Kelly has shown himself to be gutless, and right now I say his career at Oregon will be very short lived. He is cutting Blount loose to cover his backside for the worst Duck performance in 20+ years. The Ducks were out coached, and out prepared. That is all Chip Kelly.

This BS about how they are going to stand by him and continue with his scholarship, and let him practice with the team, and let him stay in school is the biggest stinking pile of garbage I can conceive of. Lets be honest, Blount should not be at Oregon. The only reason he is at Oregon is because he is big and fast. He is not the sharpest tool in the shed, nor the brightest bulb in the room. To act all high and mighty and politically correct and say we are going to stand by him, but we have to set limits is laughable. He will leave before classes start, and the Ducks will say good riddance. They were using him, he was getting nothing out of his scholarship. It is easy to cut bait on someone who doesn’t matter, and that is exactly what they did. To act high and mighty now is pure hypocrisy. The U of O gladly and willingly let a totally unqualified student enroll, because he was big and fast, and now when it suits their purposes they cut bait. Dwight says the team would be better off without him, and maybe so, but tough luck, you signed him you live with the consequences.

With regards to the Boise State player and his lack of punishment I say what a joke. The NCAA makes a big deal about sportsmanship, has all the players come out and shake hands, throws flags for taunting, but they turn the other way with the kid from Boise State. The whole incident would not have happened if Boise State had controlled their players.

While you have every right to be an obnoxious pie hole when you win, some times there are consequences for being an obnoxious pie hole. The NCAA likes to talk about how they are going to take a stand for sportsmanship, but when the rubber meets the road they are all bark. So let me the first to say it, the kid from Boise State got what he deserved. That punch will mature him a heck of lot faster than just about anything that has happened to him in his life. All this BS by college coaches about forging strong upright young men is BS. What they forge is a mind set that so long as you win you can get away with just about anything, but every once in a while life pops you in the chin and you go down, and you learn more in that one moment than 4 years of college football at Boise State ever taught you.

    • Bill McDonald says:

I heard they are going to discipline the player from Boise State. They just haven’t announced it yet.

      • Dan says:

BSU announced today that Coach Peterson will be spending extra time with him this week, talking to him and hoping he learns from this. The horror, the horror…
That said, the reality is that what happened is simply a reflection of currrent American culture. Kids are encouraged to trashtalk as if words and ideas mean nothing. We see the same in our world of politics and entertainment. The acceptance of insult, lies, ridicule, and personal attacks set the stage for this. The BSU player simply felt it was OK to insult. We heard an apology from Blount, but where was the one from the BSU kid? We’re all still waiting.

        • EngineerScotty says:

“Spending extra time with him” is mostly likely a coaching euphemism for “running him up and down the stadium stairs in full uniform until he pukes, and then running him some more”. No matter how well-conditioned a football player is–few of ‘em are long-distance runners by training.

I suspect Hout will be sorry he popped off to Blount, though not as sorry as Blount.

      • And where did you hear that Bill?

    • Eric says:

      Kevin,

You seem to think that your anger toward the “boogeymen” makes you right? (the fact that life is not perfect makes you angry)

You seem to think that LGB’s insane level of anger was a very good teacher in this situation? (a better teacher than a college education)

You seem to think that your anger now is a good teacher for all of us who read this blog? (your feeling of indignation toward a perceived weakness in us)

And, you think that Chip Kelly’s actions stem from the fact that he is gutless? (the hypocritical system seems to be his fault?)

      Wow!

And you don’t see any problems with your own situation? Your own anger?

Just to let you know, the sort of thinking that you are espousing is no longer acceptable in our society. And, unfortunately, (or fortunately, depending on how you look at it) LGB is finding that out right now!

      • Kevin says:

Anger? I am angry that life is not perfect? I think my anger teaches you something? I have anger problems? I have problems with my own situation?

Blah blah blah. Hope your enjoyed your sophomoric attempt to psychoanalyze me. I hope you don’t plan on that as a career, as that would require a great deal more perception than you seem to possess.

Not to worry there Eric boy, I am not going to around popping any of the posters here in the head. I am just providing that voice that is out of phase with your conventional wisdom.

So feel free to put all the words in my mouth that you wish, as you will not hear what I say in any event. You enjoy those noise canceling headphones.

What you want to describe as anger is what I describe as disdain, and contempt for the hypocrisy of the situation. I do not discount what Blount did, but I do not hide behind my righteousness and wag my finger at him. He had a moment of utter stupidity, which was initiated by another, and which was incited further by a great many others. He acknowledged not long after that he made a series of very bad decisions, had true remorse, and accepted that he would be severely punished. I am one who has the good sense, and the heart to accept that and allow him an opportunity at redemption. That the University of Oregon would cast him aside as they have does not deserve a hearty “Yes” and pat on the back. They have a great deal of culpability here, and way to many people are not willing to hold them accountable for their culpability. I have great disdain for that hypocrisy. They care nothing for this kid, he is nothing more than a means to an end for them, and for them to stand up and claim that they support and stand behind him, while they cast him to the wolves is contemptible.

As far as describing me as supporting Blount’s “insane level of violence” I did nothing of the sort and you betray your lack of critical thought in describing my words in such a manner. Popping the BSU player can be described as a stupid, excessive, and if you like violent momentary reaction to the actions of an obnoxious pie hole, but he was not anywhere close to “insanely violent” with that BSU player. That BSU allowed their fans and players to get as out of control as they did precipitated an excessively emotional situation, and they come off as innocent victims, of dare I say it, an insane ….. man.

My point, made with enough shock value to challenge and demand a response, was to say that Blount’s actions taught this BSU player far more about life than a stern talking to from Dan Peterson ever would. One of two things will result from the punch

1.) The kid will never again act like he acted, which means that he learned something. Something about honor, respect, and integrity, and how his juvenile actions lead to an unnecessary circumstance that inevitably lead to a young mans college career ending.

        or

2.) He will externalize the problem, blame it all on Blount, stand strident and tell the world how he was wronged and how Blount got what he deserved. As a result it will probably do something similar again, which means that nothing anyone could say or do that would ever change that young mans actions in the future, least of all a good talking to by Coach Pete.

The truth is without the punch, Dan Peterson would have probably said little or nothing and we would be at this situation again at some point in the future with this same person. I doubt very seriously that it will happen again.

        • Eric says:

I get it! LGB does not need to take actual individual responsibility for what HE says or for what HE does, (and apparently neither should you or anyone else?) because it can always be someone else’s fault. (the life is full of hypocrites excuse)

Also, I can see that LGB’s actions were merely momentary indiscretions and had nothing to do with his overall mental framework. Therefore, if there might be any sort of minor concern here, the situation has passed, and there is nothing further for him to learn. He obviously does not have further issues to resolve. He’s good to go.

Oh, and one final lesson. Young people should do there best to scoff at the moralizations of society rather than learning from them. Obviously, anyone who would punish LGB in this situation is heartless, two-faced, and cares nothing about him even though he has poured his heart out for the University. I really do get it now!

No more conventional, bla, bla, bla, wisdom for me, I’m free!

  12. BlazerDawg says:

I think everyone needs to hear the whole story. I was in the section of fans that Blount came up and tried starting S with. Do you guys realize they were yelling racial slurs at him? And not just after he hit the guy, but for the whole game. I felt so embarassed to be a white male sitting there. Our ignorance is sometimes irreprehensible. I don’t agree with what Blount did, but he’s a young man who was hearing some pretty disgusting comments being thrown at him. His reaction was to be expected, but to the extent he went, that’s where he crossed the line. I have no problem with him punching the BSU player (he said something to him that made his coach so mad he swung him around and said shutup), but to freak out like a psycho afterwards and try to pick fights with fans (who mean nothing by the way, it’s not NFL, the fans dont pay you, the school does) and the police, that’s just dumb.

But I would like everyone to know all the story before they start chastizing this young man. His reaction was over the top, but what he was reacting to DID deserve some sort of reaction. Just not the one he gave.

    • MotoMan045 says:

So BlazerDawg was it justified when he hit his own teammate twice? Remember the fans were reacting to Blounts melt down.
I’m sure Duck fans would reacted the same way.

Finally, I seriously doubt you were there. You don’t seem very credible, nor is your defense of Blount.

      • BlazerDawg says:

I’d like to know how you judge my credibility? A large contingent of my friends are from Boise, and I’m a ducks honk and they’re Bronco backers. You have no clue who I am or what I do. You have no idea what you’re talking about.

As for him punching his teammate, I don’t think that was ever mentioned by me. Also, sometimes things happen on the field (look at Steve Smith of the Panthers, he broke his DBs jaw) that get under people’s skin. I said I don’t think his actions were justified, I was just shedding some light to the fact that the Boise fans were very classless last night, at least in the section we were in.

So before you talk about credibility, think before you speak. You don’t know who is on Dwight’s blog. He is a very well known, and fairly liked person (just kidding Dwight. You know no one likes you :) ). There’s a lot of people who frequent this blog, just think before you criticize.

  13. EngineerScotty says:

    Here’s a cynical thought:

Who suspects that Blount’s season-long suspension–might just be lifted before the end of the season? Otherwise, why permit him to practice–if its anything more than lifting weights and such, he would be taking reps from other players. And in college football, practice time and running the plays is a VALUABLE commodity.

Hopefully, this won’t happen–but if the Ducks manage to be 7-4 or so heading into the Civil War, I could just see a whole bunch of sanctimonious nonsense coming out of Eugene about how he’s reformed, is Truly and Deeply Sorry, and deserves to play in the final game of his college career.

    Could happen.

    • TheStump says:

      That would be awesome.

Dwight, you’re such a tough guy. The kid screwed up, he got what he deserved, and the university has extended a helping hand to a kid that is on the verge of hitting rock bottom.
You are getting increasingly negative in your commentary, it grows tiresome.
I know..I know..”don’t visit the site if you don’t like it”..but the fact is I like the majority of your work. But good lord man, turn that frown upside down.

  14. Ed says:

If the guy ever had a shot at professional sports, Oregon’s poor disciplinary decision ruined it. Suspended for a whole season, yet the guy taunting him gets nothing more than what will likely be a heated dressing down, when he should have gotten just as severe a punishment. Taunting other players is incredibly childish, and the fact that schools allow that shows an irresponsible trend.

Maybe sometime this season someone will say “Man, I wish we had Blount to help out”, just before Oregon gets steamrolled.

  15. lefty says:

So the victim of this loss was Blount. Not sure that is fair. more people than he lost that game

I sure do not agree with what he did, but if other Ducks had same emotion DURING game??

  16. MotoMan045 says:

I’m having a hard to comprehending people’s defense of Blount.
I have watched over 40 years of sports, and his display is one of the two or three most despicable displays of unsportsmanship I have ever seen.
    On national TV at that.
Yet some people on here seem to justify his actions. It shocking how much sportsmanship has fallen in the last decade or so. People are acting like the Ducks, are a collection of choir boys, but the truth is they have always talked smack, only Boise State had some smack behind all
the talk, and Oregon yet again folded like a cheap chair.

I commend the University actions on Blount, yet still supporting him if he wishes to continue his education and training. Truth is, the NFL is still there for him if he ever had the maturity, heart and desire to accomplish that goal in the first place.

  17. SeoulBlazer says:

    Dwight,
“He obviously doesn’t like to practice (or school).” Based on what? The fact that he was thrown out of a practice, gained a little weight in the off season, and clearly overreacted to taunting and ended up going wayyy over the top. But how does this equal “he doesn’t like to practice (or school).” Be reasonable Dwight. Just because he doesn’t seem to be a articulate, sensitive person like YOU doesn’t mean he hates school or practice. Someone who has an anger management problem doesn’t equal someone who hates school. They just have trouble with their temper. You always preach facts Dwight. Come back with facts and prove to me he hates school. Don’t spout off without the facts Dwight. Maybe you are right. But at least prove it with some evidence. Thursday night wasn’t evidence for hating practice or school. You know that. It was a 21 year old man losing control. Stop kicking a dog when he’s down.

    • MotoMan045 says:

Dwight is a blogger now, and as such he’s free to post he’s opinions just as much as you or I. Truth is Blount was already suspended last season for missing class, and workouts, and his work ethic was also called into question by his coaches, so its understandable people are questioning his commitment, not too mention his maturity and decision making. He, and only he, brought this onto himself.
The shoe is squarely on Blount foot now, to prove that he deserves a second chance, and an opportunity to play in the NFL. I’ve hoping he proves us all wrong, and I commend Oregon for giving him the opportunity to get his head straight.

  18. Justin says:

If Blount had run for a 100 yards and scored two touchdowns, he would serving a one game suspension right now. But he didn’t. His biggest mistake was playing poorly; not losing his temper.

  19. Senator Scott says:

We really need to know what Hout said. What if it was a comment about Blount’s mother? What if he used a certain n word?

    • kitsune says:

Hout said, “Now you owe us two ass-whoppings.” That’s a pretty vicious taunt, isn’t it?

Maybe Blount has a future in MMA. Do they allow sucker punching in that, Dwight?
