Baseball got lucky tonight

October 27th, 2008 by Dwight Jaynes | Filed under Baseball.

The Rays tied it up and made it easy for MLB to call a halt… but if the Phillies had been ahead 2-1 after five and a half innings, it would have been very difficult to stop the game. NOBODY wants a World Series decided in a six-inning game. Baseball needs to change that ancient rule in the postseason.

You shouldn’t EVER decide a world championship in fewer than nine innings. Anything short of that, regardless of score, ought to be just a suspended game, to be completed the next night. It’s fine during a 162-game season, but it’s a rule that should have been changed a long time ago for the postseason — particularly in this era when we’re pushing into November weather with these games.

At the point I’m writing this, I don’t even know if the game will be resumed tonight. Either way, it’s time that rainout rule gets changed.

They’d still be playing in that if the Rays hadn’t tied it.

    Which is ridiculous.

Actually it’s dumb during the season too.

Oh yes, watching that game certainly was time to stop it. but not to hand series to Phillies. they need to win on the field. so Selig needs to fix that

Hard to believe they may continue in 2 hours, that field was really sloppy

In watching ESPN after the game, it sounds like Selig met with team officials and said the game would not end before 9 innings. It is just me or is Selig always a step or two behind. (Just one example being his reaction to the tied All-Star game.)
