As expected, it’s Paul Westhead at UO

March 26th, 2009 by Dwight Jaynes | Filed under Coaches, College basketball, Oregon Ducks.

Normally, of course, I wouldn’t spend an inch of this blog talking about a college woman’s basketball coach. Sorry, but that’s the way it is. But in this case, Westhead’s pro coaching background makes it an interesting hire.

He’s been the head coach of a team (the Lakers) to an NBA title and a team (the Phoenix Mercury) to the WNBA championship — the only person to have done so. He’s so totally committed to fast-break basketball I think it’s going to be very intriguing to see what he does at the college level with his system.

For ticket-selling purposes alone, it’s a great hire.

why wouldn’t they just hire this guy to replace Ernie Kent?

  2. I loathe all things green and gold, but I’ll be front and center at Mac Court next season. Wow.

Isn’t Westhead like over 70 years old? UO must be thinking about a very short term revival of the wbb program.

Wouldn’t he have been better suited for the mens program? Who will the mens program hire? Pat Riley?

  4. Jake Taylor says:

Bob Barker will be announced as the new men’s coach on Friday.

  5. Great if he were 20 years younger, and if He was coaching Men who fit his system better

  6. Barry says:

Must be a bunch of young’uns posting in here. You guys think everyone who reaches 70 is ready to keel over? He’s got tons of experience. More power to him.

I haven’t been this excited since the triple aaa all star game

i have coached HS girls bball for about 6 years. the run and gun works well in womens ball. when he was with the mercury he adjusted the break to fit his players. dont worry about his age, for 70 he is in great shape. i have followed westhead for years and will keep up with the ducks.
